I have rencently gotten myself a Patterdale Terrier X Jack russel named Dexter. He is about 4 months old. I had taken him to dog obediance school over the past 2 weeks, but I was wondering will he be an easy dog to train. He seems smart so far but I'd like your opinions cause you guys seem smart.
Thank you, I'm new

Welcome Sir_Tam, I have never heard of a Patterdale terrier...JRT are smart and very active though. It sounds to me like you are on the right path to a well behaved dog. Obedience is a great start, and this is a wonderful place to pick up tips and advice.

Smart dogs are the ones to be careful with.LOL. They are the ones that try to push the boundaries. They are usually easy to train and love to please but also like to see how much they can get away with. They can also bring a stubborn streak to them. I have 2 rottweilers which are known to be smart. They both were very easy to train in obedience and thrived to learn more. My one though likes to push the boundaries. Likes to see how much she can get away with. I just let her know who is boss and problem is solved till she tries again. My other one comes up with her own tricks. She figured out on her own how to open doors, turn on a couple lights, pull down the stove door, all on her own. To her it was just fun. It is neat to have a dog do this but it can also present a problem. I had to put locks on all my doors and keep the outside doors locked at all times. I know JRTs need proper training as they can be aggressive dogs. And actually cause the most dog bites in the US. Just some info. Good luck with your baby

Here's another Patterdale web page: http://www.ptca.00go.com/index.html
Patterdales sound very much like a Jack Russel but since they aren't as popular, they are probably closer to breed standard. This little guy is probably going to enjoy working. If you can get into one of the earth dog groups it ought to be a hoot. They run meets where these little guys get to track after prey. The prey animal is protected from dogs which have to negotiate an underground maze by scent. It looked like a lot of fun. My pup is a Jack Russell/Lab cross and at 50 lbs way too big to go down a rabbit hole. The will is there. She's just too big. Watching her try is a riot. The rabbits sure can run faster than she can dig!

Behaviorly, this little boy ought to be typical of what you'd expect from a Jack Russell: very smart but keep him occupied. Toys with surpises in them that he has to ferret out helps. Hiding things for him to "discover" will probably be a favorite game. For my overgrown terror, I've found that keeping her busy means that she's happy and out of trouble.

Don't they have to be pb to compete in Earthdog? Great idea though...any doggie sport, agility, flyball..etc. would probably keep this pup happy and out of trouble.
