My cousin has a maltese (sorry if i spell the dog names wrong!!!) and she wants to get a bulldog to live in the house with her, her father goes on business trips, and she doesn't like staying alone with her mother, even though they have an alarm system. i don't know much about bulldogs, but i know that they have a reputation for being mean. whether this is beacause some people train them to be mean, or it is just their nature, i don't know. but i am worried for her maltese. i tried telling her wait until her maltese has passed on (he is an older dog, with weak teeth, and of course, he is only like 2-5 lbs) because he might be in danger because of his small size. please give me some advice on if she is making a bad choice

No dog is born mean...circumstances and people make dogs that way. People who don't understand this carry on the bad information and idea. Does your friend want an English Bulldog or an American Bulldog? Is she experienced with dogs? Is she willing to take classes and learn some of what she doesn't know? Will she have the support of her parents?
I have a Poodle that is 9 years old, A 2 year old Aussie mix and a 8 month old Catahoula. My Poodle does fine. They all get along well. Every dog is different, even within it's own breed. Breeds of dogs may have traits that are unique to that breed....but being mean is not one of them. Yes people out there do breed dogs to be aggressive on purpose, and then train them to further be that way. This is why doing your homework and choosing a responsible breeder with experience and good sense is important. I think the larger part of the problem in certain dog breeds having a bad reputation is the people who own them. They don't understand dog behavior or how to be a responsible owner.

I think your friend should do a whole bunch of research about the breed she is interested in and go from there. She should also look into how to introduce a new dog to the family and present dog. I am sure people here can put up links for you to give her to read. A well prepared and informed dog owner is the best kind of owner.

A bulldog mean? No way they ar big babies. I have never met a mean bulldog one that likes to be dominate but never aggressive. And it is true there is no bad breed or bad dog just bad owners!
