Hello anybody,

Can any body help us, we have a dog shes about two now but over the last few months occasionally when we cuddle her she occasionally growls and shows her teeth to us.

This seem to happen especially when we kiss her, or go near her in her bed. She usually sleeps with us in our bed, and she does it there too. We have bought her a new bed today, but when shes in it she growls at us when we are showing her affection. Some body please help i dont want to shout at her if its something we are doing wrong.

Please help

Many thanks

Nathan Fryer

Hello Nathan, If this is a sudden new behavior, I would sit down and try to isolate an area that may be causing her pain by gently manipulating her limbs and palpating her soft areas. If you do not feel it is safe to do this or you aren't comfortable doing it...take her to a vet. She may be experiencing pain and wanting to protect herself when you hug on her. Making sure there is not a physical reason is the first thing to do, if she is cleared by the vet and it seems to be a behavioral issue, I would seek out a trainer. Keep us posted. Smiles, Maisey

::::Round of applause::::
Maisey's advice about taking her to the Vet is excellent!!!

Often times, if the aggressive behavior is sudden and includes growling or snapping when a part of the body is touched, pain is the trigger!!
If there is no medical reason for her agression, you need to reassert yourselves as Alpha Dog, not, her!!
There is a program called Nothing in Life is Free. It teaches the dog that you are in charge and they need to respect that. http://www.greyhoundlist.org/nothing_is_free.htm

I hope things work out for you and your dog soon

If pain has been ruled out by vet or you, then this is a definate behavioral issue. Many dogs like to have their own personal space,(their bed) and will growl when approach or touched. They feel that this is theri turf and it should be respected. Same thing in your bed. When this happens in the human bed the dog should be told right away no and put off the bed. Always do this. This way it will learn if he behaves that way he can not get on the bed. Your dog is trying to get her aplpha status set up. do a search on the alpha dog. If you don't do something now, then you could have a very bossy dog on your hands. Same thing goes for the couch, if she growls at you put tell her no and tell her to get down. Don't say go to your bed becuase you don't want her to think her bed is the bad girl place. It is her safe haven. I have a female just like yours. It has been three years since I got her. She is now about 6 1/2 years old. Very bad at first but now in about the last 6 to eight months is way better. Don't let her be the boss. Which is what she wants. What breed of dog is this?

Try the book 'Dog Speak' it will help you communicate with your dog and read their body language better. Sounds like your dog may be thinking that she is on your level. You may need to keep her out of your bed. Also many dogs, according to the book, don't really like to be hugged. They may be reading a hug as a form of dominance. I'm not finished reading it yet but so far it's really good.
