Hi Guys, I'm at my wits end with my pet insurance policy as I've discovered that it doesn’t cover as much as I first thought. This panic has come about due to a little scare this morning. On the everyday morning walk the local park was subject to what I can only describe as a freak accident as some guys dog leaped into the air to retrieve a stick it's owner had thrown it didn't quite catch it right and as the dog landed the stick bounced off the floor and punctured the poor dogs face. This absolutely horrified me and it suddenly dawned that this could have been one of my dogs and I could have potentially been in trouble insurance wise. If anybody in the UK has a policy they could recommend, I would be extremely grateful.

the poor dog, someone eles just posted the other day that their dog was injured playing with a stick. As for pet insurance. I had Vetinary Pet Insurance, which is suppose to be the best, but I cancelled it. I think it is good for big injuries, but it seemed I got back so little from what my bills were. And I had 2 dogs and a cat on it at $80.00 a months mas just too much. Honeybear IP: Logged |

I just started Veterinary Pet insurance last month for my two Huskies. I am paying 50.00 a month. Are you saying that you had some problems with them? They don't pay out much? IP: Logged |

Hi Rich, I am not in the UK but I too have cancelled my pet insurance. My pup got hematomas on both ear leathers, they are like huge blood blisters. He had to have surgery to drain them and then sew the skin back to the cartlidge. My vet and I both went over the policy and agreed that it was a covered procedure. NOT!, they refused to pay, and I was left with a huge vet bill. I looked over my policy very carefully then and called the company to ask alot of "what if" questions. I was very angry and disappointed. Pet insurance may work for some people, it would depend on their pet and situation. I did a bunch more research into other companies and finally decided to set up an emergency account. I put a certain percentage of each paycheck into the account and then forget about it. It is only to be used for pets. I have horses too so it works out better for me cause it can be used on any of my animals for anything that goes wrong. The wonderful thing is...if it doesn't get used after building to a base amount that we set, we can use the extra for something fun, instead of the insurance company getting it. I am not saying that pet insurance all sucks...just that it's not for everyone. If you are going to purchase it, I strongly suggest you research it to death. IP: Logged |

This is the one I use. www.petcareinsurance.com It reimburst me for the meds my poo takes. it basically is paying me right now more than I am putting in. They have a few different choices to choose from. Never throw sticks for your dog to fetch. Way to many things can happen. On the vet emergencie show there was a lab that had somehow got the stick shoved down his throat. He lived but of course had to have surgery to get it out. It was long too. IP: Logged |

Kerriesue, VPI paid my bills for the most part, and in a very timely fashion but I seem to recall that they werent the amounts I thought it would be even though they provide a list and what they cover and the amounts. If I could afford it, I would consider keeping it, and also get the part that covered the meds since that was a huge part of costs. Also they dont cover cancer, that is a seperate policy so if your type of dog (like golden retrievers) is prone to cancer that may be something you want to get. As it is I spend about $100.00 a month on their basic care alone. HOneybear IP: Logged |

Thanks honeybear! I have been debating whether it is a good deal or not. My Huskies playfight really rough and I have been waiting for injuries to occur, that is why I got it - just in case. I will give it some time to see if it pans out or not. IP: Logged |

Thanks guys for the advice and recommendations, I'm so pleased that I have managed to find such a friendly and helpful place. I was enquiring at another forum and somebody happened to mention a UK based company that was supposed to be the place for me to go so I was wondering if anybody had ever come accross it?? It looks pretty damn good to me, what do you guys think? Snipped by Admin... [This message has been edited by Auspetian (edited 08-28-2003).] IP: Logged |

Rich, What you need to know is what is covered and what is not. Also what the deductible is. I couldnt find this on their site. ask them to send you info on this. Vetinary pet insurance (what I used to have) had list of most of procedures and illnesses and what the amount, for instance, ear infections maybe would have a liftime cap of $500.00. Good luck Honeybear IP: Logged |
