:::Grr!::: I believe the AKC Weight Standards are a big mistake!!

Too many things make up a dog's weight and applying a weight standard to all dogs in a breed does no good!!!!

I have always lived by the "The rib test" rule and it has never let me down

Can you see the ribs? Too thin
Can you feel the ribs with a small amount of pressure? Ideal weight
Does it take a lot of pressure to feel the ribs? Weights too much.

A good interactive tool is at this site!! http://www.iams.com/en_US/jhtmls/landing/sw_Landing_page.jhtml?li=en_US&bc=I&pti=LP&sc=D&lsc=A&bsc=M

A tip my Vet also shared with me, that has helped me is, If the dog has an hour glass shape from the top view, the dog's weight is good. If you see bumps or an uneven line where the spine is, the dog is overweight. If you see a small back area where the sides are indented, the dog is thin.

I guess I should ahve said that thanks. The last post was very true. That was jsut the weight given for the breed standards. It does not mean that that is what the weight of your dog should be. What was said in the above post is more so what you should be looking for. Let alone the fact that a 15 pound difference in a dog is a huge difference.

What you said was accurate as long as you allow for breed differences. What is just right in one dog is over weight for another and light for a third. I'll assume this is about bassets?

You might note that some vets like to keep them a little on the light side because it reduces long term problems from arthitis and the belly scraping on the ground.
