This is so disgusting, my prayers are with the poor owners and the dogs suffering Pet's Poisoning Is Family's Second Loss Tuesday was a tough night for dog owners and veterinarians who were working hard to save the lives of the pets. One of the dogs who died was Taro, a ridgeback mastiff. He had been on a respirator after ingesting something laced with poison a few weeks ago at Laurelhurst Park. It's hard for Sarah Roberts to sum up in a few words precisely what her dog Taro meant to her. "Taro was my life," said Sarah. "My whole schedule was surrounded by him. I put him first before anything." Taro was one of the dogs KATU saw at the Dove Lewis animal hospital earlier this week, the poison had destroyed his throat and lungs and he struggled for every breath. Tuesday night Sarah decided her best friend had struggled long enough. "He wasn't in pain, but he was in a lot of distress and I knew it was in the best interest of him, and he knew and he was happy to see me there," said Sarah. Meanwhile the normally busy Laurelhurst Park continues to be quiet, as dog owners stay away. "Oh - it makes me tremendously angry. I wish we could find this person," said veterinarian Dr. Wood. "If anyone has any information, I think the only way we're going to find this person is if someone who knows this person comes forward." Sarah wonders about how and why that person could act so maliciously toward innocent dogs - like her own. "What happened to you, what happened to you along the line that you would do such a thing," said Sarah. "To think that that's the cure, that you would hurt an animal that did nothing to you." Sarah's family actually has lost more than Taro to malicious individuals. Sarah's aunt owned a dog named Ivy which was a chocolate lab that died three years ago in Eastmoreland - when a tennis ball bomb exploded in Ivy's mouth. Thus far, Portland Police have received 14 reports of apparent poisoning from pet owners and veterinarians. Victims whose dogs were poisoned are urged to talk to the detective handling the case. Currently, Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case. In addition, the Lucky Lab Brew Pub is holding fundraisers to raise more reward money. The first event will be Wednesday at the eastside Lucky Lab. The second will be Thursday night, at the Lucky Lab in Multnomah Village. Both fundraisers will run from 5 to 7 pm. IP: Logged |

I live in Portland, and although I don't use this park, I am afraid to go to any park with my dog for fear that a copy cat may try it in other parks. It makes me sick and angry that someone thought this may solve any issue. IP: Logged |

I hate when people harm animals like that beucase they criminal doesnt really get in that much trouble, but if he/she was doing this to people they would probably be sentenced to life. But since it is animals that are being harmed they would probably just have to do a couple of years. Its gross that people would do that to animals . IP: Logged |

Maybe I'm just stupid, but has anyone thought to check the grass at this park? Maybe it's in the fertilizer used there or something. I'm kinda naive, but I'm not quite sure HOW a person can poison a dog without the owners knowing. But i do feel very bad for all the pups in misery now because of this. IP: Logged |

Hi Jubilee, The park does not use the chemical at all that the dogs have been poisoned with. It is called Paraquat, you need a federal permit to use it. All the dogs have been poisoned with meat that was laced with Paraquat and thrown into bushes. Here is a link for the story. and a second part of the story... IP: Logged |
