I was just looking through the for sale ads and I saw "Christmas pups" (...already!), anyway I had to post here about them. It is so wrong to get a cute little puppy for christmas as a loving gift, and then a few months (or weeks?) down the line, when the cute little puppy starts growing up, its time to get rid of him! Most puppy buyers, and especially x-mas pup buyers, are some how unaware that these are living, FEELING, thinking creatures. Not all x-mas pups or reg buys turn out this way, but its just seems so easy for some people to "buy" this animal, which they love for some time, then just dump them.

There are so many good dogs looking for homes which have been abandoned (not only for bad behavior reasons! Reasons like owner ill, or owner passes away, moves, etc.) and I personally think that maybe this site can have For adoption section instead of a for sale one. If they are going to buy a puppy, they should buy one from a real breeder anyway, (some of the for sale ads had real breeders, maybe) and it will take time to find a breeder. Some of the ads seems like the owners had an accident, or on purpose, and sell them. and if its on purpose, then these are what we call backyard breeders. people who breed for the profit of it. think about it, a cute little puppy, maybe up to 10 or more pups in a litter, and each one for at least $400, and they dont have to pay for shots, or for any checkups, because the buyer does not ask these things, and if they do and the reply comes as a no, the pups still get sold! anyway, back to the math, thats 4000 per litter, for not doing anything other than causing (not all) some of those pups to go through a tramatic puppyhood, or if the dogs get good homes, they are more prone to temperment and health sicknesses due to the unknowledged breeding.

PLEASE! Before you think about buying a puppy, think about all the dogs who NEED homes, and you will be saving a life! Alot of those dogs are already trained too!

OR! If you insist on a puppy, buy one from a good breeder! One who will do medical check-ups, have REASONS for breeding the specific pair, socialize their pups, and LOVE what they do!

My kids (actually not my oldest, but the other two for sure) still believe that Santa Claus is one fine dog breeder

I did it and understand your concern. Dog ownership should be placed right up there slightly below the decision to have a child.

I agree this is horrible, I have posted from a shelter website below that has had tremendous success getting shelter dogs adopted the during the holidays called home for the holidays vs people buying pets, I think it is a great program and the awareness their are lovable pets at shelters available. The original article was about how shleter dont like to adopt out pets during the holidays because somany of them get returned, but then they had this idea and called it home for the holidays, and making sure info is included how to care for them training, coupons etc, here it is.

A quarter of a million orphaned pets to go
“Home 4 the Holidays”!
More than 225,000 orphaned dogs and cats are expected to begin the New Year in their new homes following the 5th annual Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption drive.

Home 4 the Holidays began in 1999 when Helen Woodward Animal Center organized 14 San Diego area shelters, finding homes for orphaned pets. Each pet “went home” with a holiday meal of Iams food and a booklet of coupons redeemable at PETCO.

In its 4th year 1,200 Home 4 the Holidays animal shelters and pet rescue groups in 20 countries completed 180,000 adoptions during the holidays.

* From November 10, 2003 through January 4, 2004 animal shelters and rescue groups worldwide will “join paws” during Home 4 the Holidays 2003 with a goal of 225,000 adoptions.

“Home 4 the Holidays will continue to break records,” according to its creator, Michael M. Arms, President of Helen Woodward Animal Center. “What better gift can any of us give during the holiday season than to give a home to an orphaned pet?

Arms says that adopting a shelter pet during the holidays is a necessity. “More families invite pets into their homes during the holidays than any other time of year. If our shelters turn them away, we may as well give them a map and send them to a puppy mill while the orphans continue to wake up behind bars.”

Home 4 the Holidays 2003 is sponsored by The Iams Company, PETCO Animal Supplies, the PETCO Foundation, Petfinder.com, and Helen Woodward Animal Center . Arms says, “We’re proud to be working with these companies that are dedicated to finding homes for orphaned pets and strengthening the bond between people and animals.”

Great info. Thanks guys, I agree puppies as presents do not sit well with me either. Not only for Christmas but easter & valenties pups are also advertised by indiscriminate breeders. I've even spoken to people looking for a pup as a birthday present! Can you imagine getting a dog you did not want or have time for as a b-day gift??

We live in a disposable society these days, its sad really!

Yeah i totally agree with dog ownership being right below having a child, and it is very sad that we live in a disposable society. Nearly everyone I know has had, and gotten rid of one dog, if not more. this was when i was younger and didn't know much, (and if i did know something, they didn't listen, because im younger). one of my cousins have had-and gotten rid of- over 8 dogs! they have a dog now, and it is totally negelected, over-weight, no excersize, outside all day, and everything for him is a no, he isn't allowed to do anything. When i go over their house i play with him though, and i think it makes him feel better and now i influnce my cousin to do something with the poor dog! My other cousins are a little better, they have only disposed of 2 or 3 dogs i think. and now, they have 3 very well taken care of dogs, and very loved. Its sad because when i was younger, i have also gotten rid of 2 dogs, and one of the dogs,,,,had puppies so i guess I've "disposed" of 14 dogs, counting the puppies. I really think that

1. It should be harder to get a dog, maybe some sort of. . . permit or certificate required? and

2. parents should really, well, not always listen to their kids about the dog pleas. and know if they are going to get a dog, they will ultimetly have to take care of them.

I know that my families mistake wont be repeated by me, in the least, but there was a seriousness about how wrong it was to have bred our dogs, and although i was young, i learned from it. (and you dont need a lesson like that to learn!!!!!) But most of the time, the families that have disposible dogs, teaches that lesson to their kids. The cousin that i spoke of which had gotten rid of around 8 dogs, well one of the kids growing up in that, now an adult living on her own, has already had a count of 3 dogs. I recently moved near them so I try to influnce them about certin doggie aspects. As the cousin who grew up in that and disposed of 3 dogs already, she is looking for another dog...Instead of shunning her, which i know wont work, i am helping her. This time i am pressuring her to get an older dog from a rescue who has been trained already, and who is more likely to stick around! and she is listening, and i know such a dog would work out with her. All her given up dogs have been pups btw.

anyway, my long story short!

Take care of your dogs(all your animals!), they are living, loving, thinking creatures!!

BTW-for the concerned- when i say dispose, i just mean given up, and as for my families disappointment, they were given to a no rescue, (the puppies and the mommy)

thx for all your replys!

OH YEAH- the home for the holidays is actually a good idea. And the thing i love about most rescues is that if it doesn't work out with the owners and the new dog, they know where their dog goes, back to them. Just saying they are all accounted for.

I wonder what the succsess rate is; how many dogs get returned. . .
