What is everyone using for flea and tick protection on their dogs? I used to use Advantage, but then when I got Dooley, I switched to Frontline, because I take him trail riding with me and wanted him protected from ticks as well, plus he is always swimming. The Frontline does not seem to be working this year worth beans. We had a very mild winter. We do keep our home and yard treated on a regular basis. IP: Logged |

I use sentinal which repels fleas as well as prevent heartworm, and during tick season I use flea collars, they are called preventic. My vet is not keen on these medicines that can do all - says it is not very good for the dog. Honeybear - and that new one that does repel mosquitos make my leary since it is so new. I feel the same way about new produts...and I just read the site information on Advantix...they applied it to dogs once a week for four weeks and since "no adverse reactions occured" say it's safe. 4 weeks? I want to know what long term effects there may be, what risks are there? I do know that I have used Advantage on my Poodle since I got him and he has never had any reaction or problems that I am aware of in all these years. IP: Logged |

i use frontline plus on bella.. i was told to apply it monthly, since there are tons of fleas down here in south florida; however, i am not comfortable with that because i have heard of complications arising when we use these chemical type products.. so i normally use it about every six weeks.. i have not had any problems since i started her on it seven months ago.. i'd love to hear what everyone else uses and the goods and bads of all IP: Logged |

I use Advantage. I have only just recently heard of Advantix because a woman I work with recently used it on her 2 dogs and one of them had a bad reaction to it...the dog ended up with a tennis ball-size burn on the area it was applied but her other dog did not have a problem with it. I know this can happen with any type of product but, to me, it seems that bad reactions happen more often with the types of products created to fight off multiple insects. IP: Logged |

Hi, Our vet just recommended a couple of doses of Capstar and then to put our puppy on 'Program' which is a pill you give your dog once a month. The pill does not kill adult fleas, but it does stop them from reproducing. My vet is very much against insecticides - especially for families with children. IP: Logged |

I use FRONTLINE and by the way, can buy it much cheaper on the net than at the VET. Maisey, what do you treat your yard with ? How long after treating do you let your PET on it ? Sugar has had no reaction to the Frontline that I can detect. She does seem Lethargic after taking her heartworm meds however. Sugar's Mom IP: Logged |

Hi Sugar, I am using Frontline plus as well, however when I purchased it I was told how to use it by the vet tech and just did what she said, I didn't read the label carefully, MY BAD, so I was applying it every third month. The box says UP TO three months, but recommends every month. DUH! lol. I assumed that the reason it was more expensive was because it lasted longer. We spray our yard with Diazanon, the bottle says the pets can be back on it when it is dry, however, we keep them off it for two days. I am not thrilled with using it for many reasons, but aside from the fleas we also have these little knats that make it impossible to enjoy being in the yard at all unless we do spray. IP: Logged |

Hi all - I myself use frontline plus, but I have cats. I work at a vet clinic and have heard some bad things about advantix. Advantix is a very toxic chemical. If you have children or cats - I would not suggest it. Advantix is so toxic it has killed cats that come into contact with it. We have had 3 cats in our clinic alone that suffered terribly before coming to us. Unfortunately, even with IV fluids, and around the clock observation and meds we lost all 3. Please - do not use advantix - if it can kill cats, how good can it really be for your dogs. Just my two bits. IP: Logged |

I am using Avon Skin so Soft. Apply it after a bath or whenever need. It seems to work fairly good
