Hi!

I just got my new puppy. She is 9 weeks old and a sheltie/golden retriever. Now I have all sorts of puppy questions! (You'll be hearing from me a lot )

How much do puppies usually sleep?

Do your dogs ever eat grass and then throw it up?

What's the best way to deal with dogs and kids. Our new puppy loves our kids and even last night when seven neighbourhood kids came zooming into the yard to see her, she was pretty game. I am just worried that she might get scared with all the attention. Is it better to introduce her to people in a quiet, calm sort of way? I'm not sure what to do since kids come and go and are loud, etc, all day long - she'll have to get used to the mayhem that is our house but I'm afraid of turning her into a timid dog!

Thanks in advance for any responses.

I think that it is normal for dogs to eat grass then throw it up. I think that they might stop after they know what they will throw it up. But if they dont stop i dont think that it will matter

Congrats on your new puppy

Eating grass is pretty common, some dogs throw up after eating it and others don't. My dog eats grass occassionally but has never thrown up after eating it.

As long as she does not appear afraid around the fast moving, loud children...I think its great to expose her to them now especially if it is likely she will be around such children when she is an adult. Exposing her now to all different situations, noises and people is a great way to socialize her so she won't be fearful in certain situations later in life.

congrats on your new puppy! puppies are like babies, they need a lot of sleep and a lot of potty breaks as for eating grass i've heard they do this when they have an upset stomach; however, eating grass usually causes a dog to vomit and this is a normal reaction.. as for the kids, i agree with nern, if she seems to like the attention then in moderation it should be fine.. having the kids come will help her become socialized to different situations.. good luck with her.. note: one little trick i've heard as far as potty breaks goes is that the number of months old the pup is equals the number of hours they can hold it so at 2 months = 2 hours, etc.. keep us updated

My Aussie X eats grass alot...not alot at a time, but he is forever grabbing a few blades. Sometimes he does throw it back up, but most of the time not. Most of the time he seems to enjoy it. The last time we went to the lake, he was swimming out to grab blades of grass that were above the surface of the water, which I thought odd because grass was everywhere on land. My puppy now follows him around and snacks on the same blades that he does. Dooley(aussie) was never a puppy who ate plants in my garden but I still watch. (cause I am paranoid) I called my vet asking about grass eating..he said dogs do eat it when their stomachs are upset to make themselves throw up, but he thinks my dog likes it as well so eats it for snacks too. He told me to STOP WORRYING as he always does. LOL

Hi Everyone!

Thanks for the input. My baby is settling in very nicely. I think her tummy was a little upset because the past few days she has been eating less grass and hasn't thrown up at all. I think she might just have been unsettled by moving to her new home.

But the most amazing thing (I almost don't want to say this and jinx myself, but...) I think she's almost house trained in seven days! She is the smartest puppy I have ever seen. Ooops. Can you tell I'm that a proud new Mama?
