hi, i am new here. I just have a question from my neighbor and I couldnt find out anything online so far for her, She needs to know if it is too late for her 6 yr old F shih-tzu to mate. She still goes into heat. Does anyone have any advice on this subject? Thank you.

I', not an expert on breeding but, in my opinion most responsible breeders will not breed past 5 yrs of age. So, to you question, yes I would say it is. It is very rough on any dog to give birth. Especially since this is a toy dog, there is a chance of sick puppies, or even her mother dog sick.

Sincerely,
Lyndsey

Hi GSDMommy, welcome to the board!

A bitch can be bred at that age, yes, whether she should be bred or not depends on her health and the advice of the vet. For a first litter I would choose not to breed at such a late age. There are risks involved with any breeding but moreso with an older female - a reason many breed clubs state in their code of ethics - special care should be taken with the aid of a vet when breeding older bitches (or bitches past age 6).

If the female has been tested & certified free of genetic health diseases, is an exceptional example of the breed and has been give a perfect bill of health by a vet, then and only then should a breeding be considered and only by someone knowledgeable about breeding, whelping and lifetime care of their puppies. Your neighbor should also consult with a reputable shih-tzu breeder willing to assist and mentor her.

I don't know alot about toy breeds, but I breed pit bulls.I have to agree with Jas.Breeding a female at this age should be done very carefully.Giving birth (exspecailly the first time) is very stressful on a dog.All precaustions should be taken.I would talk to several responsible breeders in your area and see what they think. Then I would have the female checked out by the vet.
