As some of you know I have a Great Dane,,she's 2 years old.I haven't had her spayed yet,,really scared cause her mother was a bleeder and died after being spayed. Now my question,,Cleo has gone into heat about 3 times,,after the first time her nipples were swollen and never went back to normal. She looks like she has had a litter,,which she hasn't and never will. A friend of mine had 2 female boxers both spayed. One of them had very large nipples and I assumed that she had once had a litter but when I asked I was told she never did and was spayed. I don't think it goes away...it did'nt appear to in her boxer anyway. IP: Logged |

Hi Barbara, did your dog's mother have something like von Willebrand's disease? Have any of your dog's siblings faced surgery yet? I can certainly understand your fear! It is normal for some bitches nipples to grow after heat due to changing hormones. just the bodies way of preparing itself. Some bitches go through false pregnancy all the way to "term" - and show all the changes, others show only some changes before the body realizes its not pregnant. For the most part unfixed females teats will grow a bit but won't go back completely to the way they were before the first heat.

My vet calls that a "false pregnancy". Even females that have never been bred will do that. Its normal. IP: Logged |

I'd get her spayed if I were you. Dogs can get stressed- it's so in their nature to reproduce, so they can get mega stressed over this and start having medical weirdo problems. The likelihood of your pet dying after getting her spayed is very small. Still, if you're mega worried, do some research and ask your vet about the new methods coming out. Soemthing I've heard about an injection that is supposed to chemically neuter them, i've heard it's safe. Good luck! Do you have a picture of your dane? I bet she's beautiful! ~H~ IP: Logged |
