We had a Lovely English Springer Spaniel show up at our home about 4 years ago in very bad shape (beaten, and looked like he had run away). After looking for an owner (not to hard) we took hime to the vet and he is apparently purebred. He is a fantastic dog. He has a underactive thyroid problem but we have him on meds and he appears to be fine. But...for the past 3 years his coat has been growing very spotty and is dull, dry and brittle, he has had spots where he was almost bald (very short hair 1/2 inch maybe)mainly in the summer. We have had him at the vet numerous times, have done skin allergy tests, everything shows normal. This past winter his hair seemed to be growing in normal and then I decided to get him clipped for the summer and now the hair on his back and neck is coming in very spotty, the sides of his trunk are coming in fine but the rest is very dry and he seems to have broken hair on about a 1 inch strip on his tail. We have been putting oil in his food (lamb and rice only..Professional brand). He gets an odor very fast amd stinks. I bathed him yesterday with Tea tree oil shampoo and rinsed real well, today you can smell him already. I have lived at the vet with him but where I live they mainly specialize in big animals and feel they have done all they can. I do not know how old the dog is but think about 9 years, he has grey coming in under his ears. We love him and want to help hime he is our baby. He does not appear to be itchy at all. His tummy skin is usually very light pink but this summer I have noticed black spots (areas) on his skin. Any ideas??? Has anyone experienced this. Please help Thanks

I am having a similar problem with my Poodle, at first I thought it was an allergy to fleas so we became even more vigillant about keeping the yard, house and animals treated. That didn't seem to make a difference. I now think it is a combination of food and seasonal allergies. This makes it really difficult for me to isolate because he has to be on special food, finding alternatives with the ingredients he has to have, is a very hard task. I have started giving him childrens Benedryl to see if that will help in any way. I am still researching foods as well.
Since your vet feels he has done what he can...I would look into some alternatives, like a holistic vet. I know that some people think holistic or natural alternatives are ...well you know where I am going with that. At any rate, I am not a fanatic, but I have found alternative medicine very helpful with both my horses and dogs. Usually I combine traditional with holistic or Natural. I am still learning much, and there have been some things suggested that I just said no to. You have to go on your own thoughts and feelings. It seems to me like you have run out of traditional options, so I would check out what a holistic vet has to offer. Good luck and smiles on you and your guy, Maisey

I know hypo-thyroidism can result in dry lusterless coat and dry flaky skin. Sometimes the meds effect the skin & fur since what is consumed all comes out through the skin/fur. Could be he is showing unrelated signs of seasonal alopecia or yearly shedding.

What kind of oil are you putting on his food? I would stop with the oil and try adding EFA's (essential fatty acid) to his diet in the form of Cod liver oil or salmon oil, just make sure you also give Vit E with the oils. Putting him on a high quality food such as one of the Whole Dog Journal's top ten foods - i think - Wellness, Solid Gold, Innova, Eagle Pack...and such or a BARF diet, might help improve overall health.

Black spots are also common for dogs with a thyroid problem. You might want to check with the vet and have his thyroid tested again to make sure it is under control since it sounds like despite the meds something is still off.

good luck

would try changing his diet, I recently changed labs food to innova and have noticed a difference and I also add flaxseed. As for cod liver oil I would give it a try, my cat is taking it and vitamin E (recommended by a holistic vet) you just to need to make sure of the amount or go online and by what is made for dogs.
Jas - why do you need to give vit e when taking cod liver.

Hi Honeybear, I follow a lot of Dr. Billinghurst's BARF (raw) diet and I believe he states one reason it is necessary to give Vit E when giving a dog the "healthy oils, EFA's or foods high in EFA's is that the Vit E (an antioxidant)prevents the EFA's from becoming rancid and poisonous to the dog. There may be other reasons which right now I can't think of.
