I have decided to buy packs for my dogs for when we go hiking, fishing or trail riding etc....anyone have any reccomendations? I have looked at several brands online and at the store, but would like advice if anyone has some to offer. Any other tips or tid bits of experience on hiking with your dogs would be great too!

The place I got Goo's pulling harness from has packs, they look well made, but aren't cheap (though I don't know what the "average" price is for them). Here's their website: http://nordkyn.com/ . I've never really done any hiking or packing with the dogs, but have done some long distance running/walking with one of them, and a little weight pull with another. You probably already know most of this, but here's a few things I've found through what I've done with our dogs...

For the weight aspect, try to keep them "even" on both sides, as having more weight on one side can throw off their balance completely should they get into a situation where they need it. Also, in a pack, I'd look for something sturdy, but that could also be removed quickly/easily should the dog get hung up on something or need to have the pack removed in an emergency. Another thing to think about is heat being trapped under the pack, making the dog even hotter on a hot day, so you may want to try to find something with either just straps, or mesh type fabric on the underside of it (a lot of heat leaves dogs' bodies through their "armpits", chest, belly, and the insides of their legs, just about anywhere where there is thinner/less hair than the rest of them). Start by just acclimating them to the pack, put it on them for a few minutes at a time, a few times a day, while they do something fun to distract them from wearing the pack (go for a walk, or play, whatever), then work up to longer times when they seem comfortable with it. Be sure to check for any rubbing, or anything that MIGHT cause problems before you start doing any serious work, and fix the problem then, before it really becomes a problem.

On the distance aspect, it might be a good idea to get either booties, or to use a pad toughener ("tuff pad", "protect-a-pad" are two that I can think of) on them if you decide to do long distance hikes, as unless the dog is used to that type of terrain/distance, their pads may wear off very quickly.

Thanks Goob, I am not a hang back and wait kinda gal...I already bought the packs, LOL. I had been looking at a few, finally decided on Outward Hound because they were reasonable, durable, and pretty much exactly what I needed. One was $40 the other was $50. We don't do alot of long hikes, mostly we hike into fishing spots, that sort of thing. I also trail ride my horse alot, and taking the dogs along is fun. We go to the beach, camping, never really long hikes. The packs have comfort pads under the buckles, and the actual packs separate easily and quickly from the harness in case we need to get them unstuck, or for pit stops. I did not choose ones with the venting strips on the top (dogs back), but again we will not be doing heavy hiking and the underneath of the dogs is left open. We used them today for a fishing trip, they did awesome, it was like they had always worn one. Neither dog seemed to care. I really like the packs and am glad I bought them. I have that link in my favorites by the way....I am going to start doing carting/drafting with Witt soon. I got the wagon for Mothers day, I am holding off a little bit in selecting a harness, I want to make a good choice. Thanks again Goob. Smiles, Maisey
