Hi - I have had a beautiful Rottweiler in the past and now have the time and space to replace her; I am also very fond of German Shepherds and Anatolian Karabash - my question is would a Rottweiler, a German Shepherd and an Anatolian Karabash all get on OK together?? Look forward to hearing from you. Regards Adrian.

They could, its just that you would have to be careful about how and where you have them meet. Meetings should take place away from the resident dogs home turf. Also it depends on whether they are both alpha dogs. Two alpha dogs will fight. It would be good if you could get a sence of what the dogs temperments are and get possibly omega temperments, posssibly only one alpha. Getting puppies would almost guantee compatability.

Depends. Are you getting any as adults or are they pups. all at once or over the course of time? depends on the dynamics of the house, the individuality of each dog each personality and degree of socialization.

Ok I have studied packs for years now and have a pretty good understanding of how they work. First off dogs are never alpha you are. Next would be your beta dog which is almost always female. Under alphas there is a separate pack order for males and females. My suggestion to you would be to get 2 females and 1 male or 2 males and 1 female. Make sure they are all fixed as otherwise you would deal with hormonal behavior issues. I recommend 2 females and 1 male. Just has seemed to work best in situations I hear about 2 males can tend to fight just cuz they are boys. If you got 2 females and 1 male you would have you and if you had a partner you and him/her would be the alphas. Then one of your girls would be alpha, the other under her and your male would be the top ranking male under you and your partner. Alpha ranking is never questioned unless you are making that happen. Remember that. Also the dog that is second rank is usually the the aggressor. I have 3 females. A 14 year old lab mix named Oreo, a 2 year old rottweiler who I got about 7 months ago named Abby, and a 3 year old rotty I just got 5 weeks ago named Daisy. In my household 3 females work but only because Oreo is older so she no longer has a place in the pack. To the other dogs her status would be similar to the respective elder in relation to humans the old grandmother if you will. She is respected by the others and not messed with. Abby is my alpha I could tell from the first day that she had alpha position. If you are thinking about getting 3 dogs I would recommend the book culture clash I would have to find it to see who the Posted by is. I have never had a fight in my house. But the humans in the household need to know for sure who is beta. Not knowing and favoring the wrong dog because you think that dog is beta is what leads to alot of fights. I believe to a point that dogs know who is beta the minute they walk into a household. However you do have the few instances where you have 2 betas. But deciding who you want to be beta from th door is the first step. I knew I wanted Abby to be and set those ground rules from the first moment. She walks outside first, is fed first, gets petted first, the whole deal. It is less stressful for the dogs when they know where they stand. Even if a dog is omega it is less stressful for them being that as long as they know what their position is. Dogs dont fight for a higher position they fight to find out what their position is. Well I will stop typing for now. Hope some of this helped and if you have anymore questions or if i confused you on something let me know. Good luck

Hey - thanks so much to everyone who has replied!! I am intending to get all three as puppies - but I fear
I am ratrher naive regarding the alpha/beta/omega thing ... I have never heard of this before and am now very intrigued! Can any one put more light on this heirharcical issue - are there books? what are the characterisitcs of each "sign"? can you "allocate" a sign? or are various individual dogs inherently a sign? I will hunt down the book 'Culture Clash' - this is great. Thanks once again for your support. Regards Adrian.
