My boyfriend and I live in a one bedroom apartment and we really want to get a dog. We both do a lot of hiking, jogging, etc. and would like a dog who could exercise with us. We have been researching several breeds (beagles, australian shepards, border collies, jack russell terriors, etc.) but we have read conflicting reports about whether these dogs are suited to apartment living. We also have a cat, so we need a dog who will be able to live with a feline companion. We don't have our hearts set on a pure bred because we would like to save a dog from a shelter if we find one who's needs suit our lifestyle. Does anyone have experience with dogs and apartments?

Hi Ambrosia,

None of the dogs you mention are suitable for an apartment. They are all high energy dogs and even with outdoor exercise need lots of space.

Some suggestions for you to check out - and based on friends' experiences - Lhasa Apso (not sure of spelling), Maltese, Shih-tzsu,even a greyhound. (Despite what people think, greyhounds once given a good run are happy to lounge around all day.) I'm sure others here will have further suggestions.

As I see you want a rescue dog, which is just great, check out its background and breed, and make sure its not a 'working/hunting dog' - like border collies, beagles , hound, Aust. Shepherd, and so on. The web should help you with ideas. When I remember some good sites I'll post them here, and I'm sure others will have some good ideas as well.
