My 7 year old "mut" has been itchy for a while. He started losing his fur and chewing himself raw on his back and tail. I thought it was hot spots and treated him for it. It helped for a little while but now it is even worse and spreading to his legs, belly and a little on his ears, his skin is also starting to get flakey. I have tried medicated shampoo, itch relief creams and sprays. Now my 1 1/2 year old Rotty is losing fur on her back. Can this be mange? And how do you treat that? Thank you very much for any responses. IP: Logged |

it definitely sounds like it could be mange.. if it is, mange can also spread to people.. i would suggest that you take both dogs to the vet and have a skin scraping.. i had a dog i rescued that had mange, she was treated with two doses of ivermectin two weeks apart.. the ivermectin is given by injection by the vet.. if it is not mange it may be a number of other things, diet and allergies.. however, please take both dogs to the vet as soon as possible.. keep us updated on the dogs IP: Logged |

My Vet says NOT TO USE MEDICATED SHAMPOO'S...that it does not help and usually makes it worse. I use OATMEAL shampoo and think it has helped. I even put some raw oatmeal in cheesecloth and put it in her bathwater and it seemed to be soothing. I hope this and other input will help. I know it's trying. IP: Logged |

Sounds like this could also be allergies. Possibly a contact allergy or food allergy. You might need to put him on an elimination diet to find out what's bothering him. And avoid using chemicals or harsh detergents in and around the house. Fabric softener is another big irritant for some dogs, its not good for dogs. Has there been any change in household products, treats, or food? Take him to the vet just to be sure. IP: Logged |
