My little 6 month old peek-a-poo had her spaying yesterday morning and we opted for them to keep her a few days to TAKE CARE OF HER.

WELL, we got SICK to see her and get her home today. The clinic was already closed, NOBODY, bothered to tell us that NO-ONE would be there with her the whole weekend.

Only the Walking staff that comes to walk, and feed them twice a day.

I was LIVID ....cried on the phone with the doc when we left a message on the EMERGENCY number. Told her we were not told they would close at 1 PM ...not be available for a check out til Monday..yada yada ..and we had LEFT SUGG because we wanted her to have the best of care. THEY LEFT HER TOTALLY ALONE.

AND they charged us an arm and a leg. $25.00 for an AFTER HOURS DISCHARGE. BURNED ME UP.

The total for spaying, pain meds, and her AFTER HOURS CHARGE was $250.00...the visit last week, which was a NEW PUPPY CHECK UP, and shots was $199.63. With all the stuff we have bought for Sugg and good food, toys, kennel, $300 for her, and all this ...we are at $750.00 here in no time.

IS THIS RIGHT ? I mean....AM I BEING TAKEN FOR A RIDE HERE ? I think I'll learn how to DOCTOR HER MYSELF. I have taken beautiful care of my 2 time cancer survivor husband and myself for 20 years with Lupus and Fibromyalgia.

I cannot afford GROOMING anytime soon either.

RATS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IS this the norm ? We knew it would cost MONEY to care for her and wanted to get her started right, but we have not been prepared for this much money sooooooo soon. I HOPE SHE IS NOW in good shape for a while, for I will have to do without MEDICAL CARE FOR MYSELF if this keeps up.

I'm really PUT OUT !!!

Anyone else DOCTOR their own pet, use home remedies ? ETC ? I'm not talking about surgery, but I do want to do a lot of NATURAL stuff for her. She had drugs that ran her up the wall when she got home....I'm not giving it to her again. A strong PAIN killer.

I'm very discouraged !!!! Thanks for letting me vent.

Sugg's Mama.....

I think vet prices will vary depending on where you live and which vet you go to. Im in NY and it cost me about $60 for my puppy's first visit which included a check up, first set of shots, worm treatment and flea treatment. A month later I had to bring her back for booster shots which cost me about $42 and then a month after that I had to bring her back for her last set of shots and also to be spayed...it cost me about $200.00 and she had to stay over night after the surgery for 1 day and I had to give her tranquilizers because she was so active they were worried she would rip her stitches out. So all together it cost me about $302.00 for everything. I think you will find that the most expensive part of owning a dog is when they are puppies...after that(as long as no health problems arise) the vet bills drop considerably.
Hope this made you feel a little better

Hi, i'm sorry your having such a nightmare with your baby's surgery. I had my malti-poo spade a few months back, we brought her home the same day as the surgery was done. we dropped her off in the morning, they said if she could walk on her own we could pick her up after work. i took the next two days off to stay home with her, then it was the weekend so i had 4 full days before i had to leave her alone again. she was definitely not herself for those 4 days, obviously she was in pain so i was glad i could be there with her.

i do not blame you for being outraged! to leave your dog alone except for an occasional visit from someone for an entire weekend is unthinkable, doubly so after surgery. i'm sure you would have taken her home with you if you had known. if i were you i would demand to have them let you come get her. my concern was not only for my dogs physical well being but her mental state as well. being surrounded by strangers instead of her own humans is scary for them, to be left alone in a strange place and recovering from surgery i think is cruel. demand that they let you go get her! camp out there until one of the walk-in staff comes and then take her if thats what you have to do, especially if your leaving her there was voluntary.

as for the expense i don't know what to tell you. we are on a health plan with our vet where i get charged monthly on my credit card and it covers routine visits for shots and such and it covered the spaying as well. so add it all up and i've paid a fortune but i do not have to pay anything when we have our visits. it works out well for us for now because a little each month sure beats a large amnt periodically.

anyway, i hope you get your little girl home with you soon and hope everything turns out good for you both. don't worry about venting, i don't blame you one little bit.

Oh, I'm sorry, I DID GET HER AND BRING HER HOME. I'm sorry I did not make that clear.

Yes, my husband called her back...I was crying and COULD NOT...and told her we wanted an after hours discharge if that's what it took.

We met her there, paid the $250.00 and LEFT with our baby. She is here with us now....not feeling real well, wanting to be more active than she should be and MISERABLE with the stitches.

She ate like a horse when we got her home yesterday and drank too...she peed, pooped, and all was good until this morning and she has not peed nor does she want to touch her food.

I think she's over the EXCITEMENT of coming home and feeling pretty puny again. They gave us pain meds that are making her crazy...will try not to give those today and she if that helps. I don't think she's sin much pain...just out of sorts ya know.

Thanks guys for walking through this with me.

I WAS GOING TO GET HER YESTERDAY if it took an act of CONGRESS and so we DID. MY BABY IS HOME where she is loved and taken care of her.

I am still maddddddddddddddd !!!!!!!!

I brought my poodle into a spay and neuter clinic and she was out in about 4 or 5 hours. They said to try to get her up and walking soon so it would get the anestia (sp)out of her system. She did alot of yelping because she really was not as co-herant and maybe did not know what was going on. $65.00 for spay, shots, rabies vaccine. my regular vet would have charged over $175.00 and would have kept her until she knew what was going on around her. That would have been the better thing to do. But when I had called them it seemed like they kept adding on different amounts for different proceedures. She did fine though I kept her close by and by about the 3rd day she was acting fine. 2nd day a little sore. I would have been really mad too. The reason for leaving them is for them to be monitored by professionals and that was not happening in sugs case. I'm glad everything is fine now. You might want to find another vet. It is ok to be demanding not in a mean way though. They will learn not to take advantage of you.

Sugar, what a dreadful experience. That vet really let you down. Firstly, the costs seem outrageous for what is a common and straightforward procedure. Here in Australia when animals are desexed you just take them in first thing in the morning, and pick them around 4pm that day, male or female. Some times they're a bit groggy from the anaesthetic, but they sleep it off.

Also I don't understand why your little dog had so much pain afterwards. My friend's dog was speyed last month and the next day she was running all over the place, stitches and all. (Not advisable, but she couldn't be stopped )

Same thing with my little male dog - last week desexed and the next day hippy hoppy everywhere, as happy as ever.

No, what your vet did is not the norm, be assured, there are many good ones out there and this one needs to be run away from, fast.

Re home doctoring for animals - there is a whole lot you can do yourself. Do web searches, go to the library, read everything you can about health care of pets. Unless it is something obviously not getting better, or obviously serious, do what you can yourself. And don't forget message boards like this - there are so many caring people around with heaps of experience who are happy to share it. Best of luck with your little girl.

Here is a little tidbit. When I first got my poodle she was a mess. Kennel cough, bad ear infection in both ears. Torn off totally dewclaw. I had gone into the groomers right before Sasha appointment. Groomer told me not to bother telling vet about dewclaw that I could fix that myself with neosporin and daily bandage changes. Worked like a charm. Her whole nail grew back in. I thought it would just heal and never come back. Also I use peroxide on scrapes anc cuts. I had bought sulfedine for dogs but if you don't cut out the hair and you have a dog with white hair it turns it yellowish. Dark haired dogs end up with bleached hair with peroxide. But with Rufus he already had some of the same colors elswhere so it was not noticable to anyone else. On his head he has white hair and the sulfedine yellowed it for months. Thats some home remedy info.

I just had my Catahoula pup neutered, he is 6 months old and weighs over 50 lbs. He was neutered, a microchip was implanted, he got his rabies vaccination, tags and licensed...ALL of that cost me $126.85. I dropped him off in the morning and picked him up at 3:30 PM. I have had the same vet for a very long time and he and I have an understanding...he has learned what I am able to do, and what I am willing to do by myself, he will give me instructions to follow, tell me about over the counter remedies and money saving ideas or remedies. I consider it a benefit of establishing myself with a vet and staying with him for a long time. We know each other pretty well. He also knows that I will not leave my dog there overnight...for the simple fact that they do not have 24 hour staffing. I have no intention of paying him to NOT watch my dog, if something were to go wrong in the night, I at leaste could take my animal to an emergency clinic. We have had this conversation, he agrees with me. Some people do not want to nurse their animals, they are not comfortable with it. Thats fine and understandable...as long as they understand nobody will be there during the night. You should have been made aware of that fact. We do have a clinic in town that has a vet tech stay all night with the animals, and you will pay through the nose fo that service. Prices vary by area, so I couldn't say what is reasonable where you are...but here, as you can see, it is much more reasonable. Good luck with your puppy, and dooo learn what you can in home remedies, but know that some stuff you just have to visit the vet for, find a vet you love, can talk with and trust and stick with them. Smiles, Maisey

You are kidding !!! Wow....I would say you have very REASONABLE Vet fees.

I took Sugg (as in Sugar) back to get her stitches out the other day and have her booster and they had me down for the wrong time and said I'd have to WAIT with my dog and be worked in since I WAS LATE.

I have Fibromyalgia and Lupus....I have not made an appointment for 8 AM (the time they say the appointment was)in 20 years, so I know they were wrong.

WE FINALLY GOT OUT OF THERE AFTER SOME ATTITUDE FROM THEM, and I am done for a year with SUGG unless something does go wrong, in which case, I do need to be looking around NOW.

They rarely answer the phone unless they put you on hold and do not come back...making you call back and wait over and over. I'd say these DOCS are TOOOOO busy for me.

I have had a learning experience for sure.

Now to the FUN PART.....since SUGG is now well and on the go. We have just bought a new Motor Home and we are about to leave for a nice long trip with our little SUGG for Florida. YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH the FUN PART IS FINALLY HERE !!!!!!!!!!

Blessings to all, SUGG'S MAMA

OK I know I will sound obsessive or odd...but I have to tell you that growing up we had the same vet, when he retired his son became our vet. When I moved out on my own, it was 45 minutes away from that clinic, so I had to look for a new vet. I actually interviewed vets before deciding on one. I asked questions like..." what I am looking for is a vet who can communicate well, give me the bottom line and all options available, do you think this is a strong point for you?" There were two vets who when I called to make an appointment for an interview, were I guess somewhat put off or insulted by the request...no matter, saved me the office call cost of finding out that they were not the vet for me. My vet to this day impresses me with his compassion and problem solving ability. My two year old Aussie is a good boy and does well at the vet, but in the beginning he was not too thrilled with being handled by strangers. my vet several times has taken him outside with a ball, played with him for 10 minutes, given him a few treats and then given him a shot or whatever he needed. My dog became friends with him while playing...so holding him to give a shot was no longer threatening. When I walk into my vets office the staff, even if it's been a year since our last visit, remembers my pets name, not mine of course LOL, but they know my pets and that speaks volumes to me.
I will admit...finding a vet who spends the time to do stuff like that is very hard...but they are out there. Bottom line? Don't be afraid to tell the vet what it is you are looking for and ask if they think they can provide that service. If not move on. Have fun on your travels this summer!

We KNEW THE VET that sold this clinic to these Docs. He was great.....thought that he would choose others that were...but it seems their main problem is they have TOOOO MUCH BUSINESS.

SHE EVEN CHARGED ME TO TAKE OUT THE STITCHES.....yep...after $250 dollar surgery bill. YIKESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS, I wanted to SCREAM at her that I take my husband's stitches out all the time (he's a melanoma patient and is always being cut on). 3 stitches, $14.50....I could have done that blindfolded....wish I had known...thought followup was included in surgery...DUH !!!! These guys charge you for batting your eyes.

I had a vet years ago when I had a poodle that did the whole smear for about $150.00 ...you stayed in the room for exams, shots, etc. NOT SO with this one...they TAKE THEM AWAY and do it all and come back in the EXAM room just to chat...hand you the BILL.

I am LOOKING.....for sure. Thanks for all your INPUT. It has been helpful.

Here is an example of how my vet works...I have a Poodle who got Kidney stones very badly, he had to have emergency surgery which cost us something close to $400, that included the cone to keep him away from his stitches, the meds he needed, the special canned food he needed and all follow up visits. Now..remember when Isaid there are some things I may not be willing to do?...well the incision on his "hoohoo" needed to be opened twice a day in order to make sure all the remaining itty bitty sand like stones would flush out when he urinated. I tried to do this at home, just couldn't do it, made me feel like crap to be hurting him. My vet said bring him in and I'll do it. Twice a day I took him in, he would put a little numbing stuff on there and flush it...NO EXTRA CHARGE. His policy is that that falls under follow up care. They also operate on a first come first serve basis for the most part, he has had to hire three other vets for his clinic in order to keep up with his client base, but he offers quality care at reasonable prices and he will spend the few extra minutes he needs to with a patient. It keeps those patients loyal, good for business. Can ya tell I like my vet?

One last thing....I would never use a vet that didn't allow me to acompany my pet into the exam room, period.

Sugar, Good luck with your new motor home, and your little pup. You deserve it.

Maisie: Wow, what a vet. And well done for interviewing them before you selected one. That's not obsessive, it shows a lot of sense.
My vet in Down Under is pretty good at suggesting simple home remedies. Like when my dog had an eye infection he said just to bathe it with mild salt water, and it worked. Whereas a former vet had prescribed costly drops.

He also told me that skin treatments suitable for humans can be used on dogs, maybe in a milder form. Like antiseptics. Nothing oral though.

Your vet sounds FANTASTIC. Next time one of my boys gets a problem I think I'll catch the next plane to Oregon - (LOL).

If you are down under...I am thinking the flight would cost more than the trip to your vet lol but you are welcome to come for a visit. Did I mention my vet is kinda cute? In a rugged, cowboy/rocker sorta way. My husband said if my vet ever gets divorced...I have to find a new vet.
