I have a 1 yr old shi-poo, and i have a horrible time with how matted his fur gets. It is so expensive to take him to a groomer, because we have to do it at least once a month, and at 60$ a time, it is extremely hard to pay for....It would be alot simplier if we could brush him, but he absolutely freaks out when we try. We have tried all different brushes, and even bought a kit to clip his hair ourselves. For some reason he cant stand his fur being brushed or clipped with a razor. I am at my wits end about what to do, becuase with it being summer he needs his hair short, whitch costs alot...but in the winter it needs to be long (we live in the midwest with quite a bit of snow) but his fur gets matted and tangled....if you have any suggestions about how to brush/clip him please help!

Did you start the brushing and clipping as soon as you got him. They really need to get used to this early on. I have a min. poodle that I groom myself. She is about 6 years old and I have had her 2 1/2 years. She came from the shelter and had the worst case of matted hair that I have ever seen. But somewhere at some time in her life I believe she was groomed from a put because she allows me to clip her hair. At first she would bite if I nicked her, but she does really well now. After you bathe your dog you should blow dry its hair so you will get an even clipping. Try to brush its hair daily. Make sure that the brush you are using is not to stiff and causing his skin to get sore. I use a slicker brush, most of the time. The first slicker brush I bought, my terrier would try to run from me he hated it. I bought a better one and he loves it now. Just maybe keep a brush next to where ever you watch tv and brush him in short seccions. Give him a treat after and tell him what a good boy he is while you are doing that. Try not to get to the point where he can tell by your voice that you are getting frustrated and or angry, they really sence that. Keep it happy time. I hope this helps some. If you were close to me I would come by and help. I have never brought Sasha to a groomer, just myself. It will take some time. I helped this gal around the block. She had NO idea how to groom her standard poodle. He was so beautiful afterward. Your dog probably thinks that it is going to hurt everytime because it has hurt before with the matting. Get those cut out and brush him everyday. Then he will come to realize that it is a good thing.
