My Rottweiler has take a turn for the worst. She is 2 1/2 years old. About a month ago her behavior has gotten out of hand. She is trained but she has almost returned to child hood. She has started chasing shodows non stop, she will go all night long if you let her. She no longer follows commands outside so I had to switch back to the choke coller. She has not shown any signs of anger what so ever. She has become far more playfull than ever before. We do spend a lot of time runnig aroung the house, playing tug of war I rub her and brush her before every walk. Before we would walk for about 10-20 min and run for about 45min twice a day. Now everytime we walk even with the choke collar she will pull and tug...if she is not trying to get away she is trying to chase a squarel. There has not been a change in our schedule. She is starting to chew on things as well as bark all night long. I asked the vet he laughed and said he never heard of any problems lick this, another said she is probably having trouble seeing. But they both said being in heat wounldn't cause her to be this way. She has been through a couple of heat cycles. So i am asking where do I go from hear????????Getting rid of my dog is NOT AN OPTION. Shes my baby. HELP IP: Logged |

Being in heat CAN cause a dog to act differently than normal, because of all the hormonal changes (which are actually taking place all the time in an unspayed female, but seem to be more pronounced when they're in heat). Have you changed her food recently? Some foods are more suited for active dogs, and if she's on one of them, that may be responsible for the jump in energy level. Could also be that she's becoming more fit, and is needing more exercise. Or maybe she's having a bit of "spring fever". It's also possible that she's still maturing (large breeds mature more slowly than small ones, for a dog a rottie's size, they may not be completely mature until 3 yrs old) and is still exhibiting puppy-like behaviors because of that. It could also be a health problem, so having your vet do a blood panel just to be sure wouldn't hurt. It would also be a good idea to get her fixed, if not to (hopefully) lessen some of her behaviors, then at least to decrease the risk of health problems female dogs can face. You can reduce the risk of your dog gettign several cancers by having them spayed, and completely eliminate the possibility of them getting pyometria, an infection that will kill them if not caught early (requires emergency spaying, and there's a high risk that they may die even with treatment) http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_pyometra.html IP: Logged |
