I am the new owner of an 8-week old pug puppy. She has only been in our house for 3 days, and the first night in the crate she didn't whine at all, she was very quiet. We have been playing with her all the time, but now whenever we put her in her crate she whines constantly, and scratches at the pad inside the crate. This goes on for a half hour, until I cave in because I can't stand the noise anymore! I have tried not going to her at the sound of her whine, but it seems like it will be nonstop! It is such a piercing cry it is driving me batty!!!! This is my first puppy so I'm not sure what else I should do. I have the warm bottle in the crate, puppy kongs to play with, etc. Help!

You MUST ignor the whining!!!! That is very important. I know how anoying it is, as I have a big baby at home who cried over everything and anything...the ONLY thing that changed his whining was me ignoring the behavior. The lil one is lonley, which is why the crying is going on...but be patient..ignor the crying for one week, then the crying should completlet stop.

Did you bring your new pup to the vet? There might be something medically wrong so I would suggest having a vet verfie nothing is wrong, then do the ignoring training.

Congrats on the new puppy... I find pugs to be great little dogs..have fun

I agree with Shmoopie. Although it's hard to ignore a cute little puggerface that sounds soooo sad, if she gets the idea that whining gets her what she wants, it will NEVER stop.

Wait for a silent interval, and surprise her with her favorite treat or toy. Ignore that whining once you find out that she's a healthy little pug.

Enjoy her! I can almost smell the puppy breath from here!

I agree with the above posts..You might also want to try putting a t-shirt that you have worn in there.This might help calm her down.

You guys are wonderful! It's nice to have some reassurance that I'm not just being a big meany by ignoring her.....it's SO hard. I am taking her in to the vet next week. Hope nothing is wrong...that's all I need!!

Rosie, have you tried putting in the crate something you have worn..if you do this make sure it is not have any buttons or threads that pup could get caught up in..(try wearing a ole t-shirt for a day...then cut it up into like a 12x12 square..this way it will have your scent on it the whining could last days into weeks...depending on the pup..

My pug was also like this when i brought him home. It is very important to let them whine as long as they are hungry thirsty or need to go outside to use the bathroom. If you have done all that you have to ignore the whining. You will probably loose at least 2 nights sleep over it but it will pay off in the long run. It is best for the puppy also. Even the little maltese mix I got 3 weeks ago today still whines some when I put him in his crate but hardley ever. he actually likes going in it now , it just he wants out when he wants out. I Promise this puppy will stop whining and even after the first or second night it will almost come to a stop. Good luck@!

I breed Shih Tzu puppies and I kept one out of my last litter. She is 8 weeks old and this is her first week alone with out the other puppies. When I put her in the crate she wines to but you just have to ignore. She is whining because she wants attention and freedom. You can't cave and let her out you have to be strong and let her whine. If you keep giving in she will never learn respect and she'll walk all over you. She is fine she just want's attention. Crate training them teaches them respect so don't give in.

I agree with ignoring also, unless you are a real sucker like I was and plan on having your pet sleep with you in the bed anyway...ha! That is what I did and instantly, sound asleep after just a few grunts, turns, and snuggles! What can I say? Now, after 7 years she is still sleeping with me, wherever I am at. LOL! By the way, I have a purebred Sheltie and would not EVER trade her, not for the world and have never regretted once letting her sleep with me.

I do not have small children either, that is another reason I didn't mind.
