We have a 10 mo. old "pet quality" pek. We live in a some-what-warm climate and decided to give him a “summer cut” to deal with the heat. I have never regretted something so much in my life. He looks ridiculous. I am so embarrassed. How long does it take for the coat to grow back? Has anyone ever done this? IP: Logged |

Okay, for a moment, forget about what he looks like. Ask your self...is he cooler? Is he more comfortable? If he is, then simply get over the way he looks...your probably saved him from heat stroke. Pekes often have to sit on ice packs when they are in coat, inorder to keep their body temp from getting to high. The dog will only worry about what has happened to him if you react badly about it. If they left a mane and you don't like it, then next time ask for short all over body and leave the tail. I do alot of pekes...and they are so much more comfortable when clipped. IP: Logged |

I feel better now, thank you! Q, the peke, is liking his new skin and I am sure our walks will be more pleasant for him. How short do you usually go? He is not a show dog, but he did have a decent coat. I would like him to be cool and happy but still look like a peke. Thanks again! IP: Logged |

On a peke, I would use what they call a number #7 full tooth blade (usually leaves about 1/4 an inch). I would do the armpits and around the genitals, inside of the legs and anus with a # 10 blade (this is for safter reasons to prevent cuts). On a peke, to keep them from looking too fakey, I would suggest that you not leave a mane, rather have the goomer go to the back of the skull with the #7 (this is behind the ears and at the ede of the first vertebrea) then take a pair of thinning shears to make it look natural. Comb the tail hair out, twist it, and cut it short to the end of the tail, giving it a bobbed look but is still feathered, then scissor the fringe on the back of the legs down to let the legs look thick but not puffed out. This short all over look can look really nice if done well. IP: Logged |

i was thinking of getting my maltipoo trimmed for the summer too. My daughter did her baby's cut herself and he looked soooo funny that i've hesitated. but we live in NC and it gets horrible here in the summer and Fluff, your right, their comfort is more important than their looks. my problem is finding someone that i trust that will let me stay during the cut, that has weekend hours and is reasonably priced, and then going ahead and doing it. i don't know how reputable groomers at petsmart are but as i've stood inline to check out i've watched them work with some of their dogs and did not like what i saw. i've seen them jerk dogs heads around and just act rough in general and i don't want my little girl around any of them. i had a groomer in NY (where i'm from) that i knew & trusted that i used to use for our family dogs when the children were young but shes passed away so i'm stuck. this is Harley's first summer so i need to do something soon. How much should i be expected to reasonably pay for a cut? she is 12lbs. and her hair is not to the ground as a true maltese but it is pretty long. also, do they let you stay with your animal thru the cut or do they try to discourage that? I agree with keeping the dog cool. My poodle will stop in every shade spot around on our walks. I trim her body between 3/8 or 1/2 inch. Still she wants the shade. But at least I know she has to be cooler. Her legs are about an inch but I may be cutting more length off soon. I love the fluffy look, but it also makes her look fat too. Shorter hair makes her look more fit. She is about 12 pounds. I have always groomed her myself. But I have asked around and it seems about $20 to $25 is the going rate for small dogs. Some places are more. We are in calif. IP: Logged |

It is good to remember that even though we may think our animals are really hot and they "should" get a cut.. they are actually built for these type of defenses. Their coats will keep them either warm, or cold, most of the time, in most breeds. But, sometimes you just need to do things like a cut. (except for some breeds, which is NO NO) My peek-a-pooh, which was solid black with white tipped front paws and white goatie,(sp?), had hair exactly like a peke. Long and soft as a baby's hair, BUT, really easy to tangle up, especially around his back-end area. It got to the point once that we had to shave his booty, just so he could use the bathroom. It was then we realized the baby needed something done. So, we decided to get him cut like a poodle and leave his hair on the tail where it curled up and leave the hair on top of head long, and it was pulled up into a ponytail in a band, which was just adorable. Looking at him, after all the hair, took getting used to, but it was so much better for him! He was much cooler and happier. IP: Logged |

I think its best to give every long haired dog a sanitary cut to keep them clean in the genitle area. I love the poodle trims. My poo is generally in the sport cut, but i was experimenting and trying out the lamb cut on the legs and the band around the neck. Doesn't anyone ever post pictures here. I am just a home taught do-it-yourselfer with the grooming. IP: Logged |
