Hi! I bought my kids a shih-poo yesterday. We paid $250.00 (is that to much)? She is our first dog. We know have her in the playpen with all the toys, towels, blankets...etc. The dog is 7 weeks old and we named her Annie. Just wondering when we dhould start potty training her? I work all day and the kids are at school, is this going to be difficult to do? Thanks for your help.

Well, it would have been great if you would have thought about all this BEFORE going out and getting a dog, but what's done is done, so prepare yourself for the work ahead. "Good" price is really a matter of opinion, and what you feel that particular "product" is worth. Apparently you felt that a mixed breed pup was worth $250, and if that's good enough for you, then it was a good price. Do you have her in a playpen like those used for babies? If so, then you're probably going to have to get something different, because she'll figure out how to climb out or tear through the webbing. Crates (or even x-pens) are affordable, and much more secure (also safer as they can't chew on it since most are metal, and easier to clean) than a child's playpen. You can start housebreaking her right now, and a crate will help with that also. A general rule to follow is that a dog can "hold it" for one hour for every month they are in age, up to around 10 hrs for most adult dogs. So, a 7 week old pup should only be able to go 2 (hrs 3 at the most) between potty breaks. It would be best if you could either come home every few hrs and let her out, or your kids could come home during their lunch time. If not, you may want to look into "doggy daycare", or simply having one of the neighbors come and let her out a couple times while you're gone. If none of that is possible, then you'll have to set up a place for her to go in the house, and be prepared for the possibility that you'll never be able to break her of the habit of going inside, once she thinks it's acceptable. Make sure she's had her entire series of puppy shots before taking her out to places where other dogs/dog owners frequent, as it's not hard for pups to pick up diseases if exposed to them.

Congratulations on the new family member

Potty training at this age should start right away. Since you will be away from the house this is going to be very difficult as you will need to catch the dog in the act to train to go outside. Try training to newspaper first and then when the dog is older and has the bladder power to hold it longer, move the newspaper outside and train to go outside. Best thing for you to do is get a book on puppy training.

As soon as the dog starts to pee or poo..make a VERY loud noise...DO NOT spank the puppy. Making a loud noise will disrupt the puppy in action and then You ASAP grab the puppy and move to the newspaper in the area you feel would be best. Then when the puppy finished business on the newspaper Praise Enourmousley.

Good luck

Thanks for the replies.

I put a crate in the playpen. She actually has been going in there to go to the bathroom and then coming back out to sleep. At 7 weeks old, she is a smart little thing. It's going to be REALLY hard knowing that a work all day but my children have wanted a dog for years and the look on their face this morning, knowing we had a dog, is worth all the carp and pee I will have to clean up!

momx3....so true!
Good luck...best of wishes. When the puppy gets a little older, I would suggest basic obedience course. This will help a great deal and give you someone to ask, in person, about your dog problems...also would be great for the kids to learn how to effectivley communicate with the dog and teach proper handling etc.

But as for the potty training...get the kids doing it too. Make them aware of how to teach the puppy where its appropriate to go to the bathroom.

Cheers

If she is going into the crate to potty, why not remove the crate and get a litter box?
You don't want her to be taught that the crate is the toilet...that will make for difficult times later down the road.
