I have heard many say that with the toy breeds that 12 weeks is what it should be. Sometimes they will say that the pup needs to have been weaned at least a week and a half. They take longer to develope.

there seems to be a lot of differing opinions on the "correct" age to bring a pup home.. it is often recommended to bring a pup home between 8-12 weeks.. many feel that 6 weeks is too young.. i brought home my pup, a shih tzu/toy poodle (accidental breeding) at 8 1/2 weeks and she did great.. she trained easily and was very healthy.. they say it is important that the pup be taught right from wrong and other essential advice about life from their mother, therefore you don't want to bring them home too early.. i can honestly say there is no definite right answer.. go with what you feel is best, you may want to pick out a vet and discuss this with them as well.. hope this helps

The only thing I concerned about is: I had to put my 7 wks old yorkie puppy down, because of Coccidia and/or Parvo...the parvo test came up very little percentage, and it could of been because of the vacinations. Anyhow, we've been bleaching what we can, and spraying this stuff that is sopose to kill MOST OF Parvo. I hope the little fella didn't have parvo though. so maybe it wont be in the house. If the breeder was responsible this would of never happened!! But it was my first time buying a purebred, so go figure. Anyways my point is, I want my puppy to have its 3rd set of shots, and to have a higher immune system....So I guess I should wait to 12 wks eh? thanks, Malteseof2003

AS far as breeders and disease, even the most careful of breeders have an attack of some disease or fatality in some breed stock. To say no, is to be lying. Now if it happened regularly or a bit often, then sure, that's just plain bad breeder material there! God bless.

as for protecting against illness it's a tough call.. the mother's milk provides the pup with antibodies (which come from the mother's immunities).. there is no definitive answer as to when these antibodies wear off, that is why many vets recommend vaccinating every two weeks (possibly three) starting at 6-8 weeks and going until 16-20 weeks.. they continually vaccinate to be sure they catch the pup with immunizations after the antibodies wear off; immunizing prior to this will do no good.. the pup is not fully protected from the disease, they are vaccinated against, until all shots have been administered.. i would suggest you speak to your vet about the situation and ask for their input, i'm am just sharing knowledge i have obtained through reading and hearing..
i wish you the best of luck in bringing home a healthy pup

Thanks y'all! My mom has asked the vets around here, and all they say is "Oh!!! You can never get rid of parvo and your others will catch it!!" But just now I got done, mopping my bathroom with bleach water, and spraying disenfectant, lets hope that it kill the parvo! >;/ I really hope it does! =) But thanks again!!!

i too have heard that bleach will not kill parvo.. i suggest you start a new topic on this board with the word "Parvo" in the topic.. those with knowledge of the disease will be able to help you.. there are many members on this board with quite a lot of knowledge and i encourage you to seek it.. best of luck

Bleach solution, in a water to bleach ratio of 10:1 kills everything, according to CLEA, which licenses/inspects/approves lab settings throughout the US. Also, Roccal is very good, and other solutions you can buy from Lambriarvet, Jeffers Vet, Omaha Vaccine, Revival. God bless.
