We have a 11 week old pure breed Rhodesian Ridgeback pup, 9 days after we picked her up she developed a large tumor and a smaller one within a couple of hours on Sunday, She has been to the vet and they have removed them and sent them off to the lab for testing. We are looking for any info on tumors in ridgebacks, also the vet said that the smaller of the two may be from her last shot but the large one was very strange looking, said it could have something like dermoid sinus or cyst but may have closed up causing the tumor, also said that the lining of the tumor was VERY STRANGE looking. I had a begign growth taken off my poodle a year ago.. I don't personally know if this is comman in ridgebacks, but hope those special benign words to come from your vets mouth, good luck. IP: Logged |

Tes (our 12 week old ridgeback) has been to the vet again making this the 8th time in the 27 days we've had her. The vet said she is a strange case, the large tumor like lumps have been removed leaving her looking like FRANKIN PUP ( Because of all the stitches). After about 8 days she had a large amount of build up so tubes were put in. She's done every thing from bitting she stitches, opening the wound to pulling out the tubes, she is having another tube put in today and a lamp shade like thing to keep her from reaching the site. We are still looking for any info on what is wrong with her. She is a pure breed Rhodesian Ridgeback and all her sisters and her brother are just fine. The vet said it may be a reaction to her shots. Can anyone help us. I love my dog but am sick of driving 50 miles to the vets,at least twice a week. IP: Logged |

Why do you have to travvel 50 miles. Is there another vet closer that you can go to. I have two 2 minutes away. And another two about 5 minutes away. Are you in the country or mountains or something. That would explain it. IP: Logged |

I do life in the country, 30 miles to the closest town with a vet but never worked with this breed, so the next town is where we go because this vet has worked with them. She is doing better today and the tube is working better this time too. We still don't know what is causing this to happen with her. We have taken her to the vet very appointment, I just want her to enjoy being a puppy and she isn't right now, we would drive a 200 mile round trip for her but I can still not like the trip.(in the mountains and in the SNOW). Sorry you have to experience this. I am familar with Ridgebacks and this does sound like dermoid sinus a condition common to the breed -- not a tumor (not at nine weeks, although tumors are common in the breed). Dermoids are a tube cysts commonly found on the neck, back, tail, along spine. What does the breeder say have you taken the dog back for them to see? A responsible breeder should check their dogs for this before letting them go. They should also pay for the removal and surgery and inform you of this problem. definitely go back and talk to them, they need to know this is in their lines. Ask them to recommend an experienced ds vet. The dog needs to get looked at for any more dermoids. Multiple dermoids are common. Sometimes they are hard to find and often missed by vets and breeders. They can be as thin as a piece of thread. Abcesses and ruptures can form from DS and can be painful and even cause death. DS not detected can appear even a couple of years later, however a dog will not suddenly develop one. The dog must be spayed as she will pass this on to her pups.
