We are getting a new puppy and our 2 1/2 year old black lab/border collie mix can be aggressive. Please give me any tips or books to read to make sure that things go smoothly. IP: Logged |

I would say to introduce them on neutral ground someplace other than home and see how things go. Also if your resident dog pretty much ignores the pup after initial sniffing all should be ok. Once you get them home, have separate food and water bowls. Dogs do get jeoluous and territorial about their things. My dog got bit by a huge malamute over his water pitcher. So, thats my advise. Also since your dog is aggressive you may want to see about getting a female that is omega. Since your first one is probably alpha. If there are 2 alphas there could be big problems. They need to have separte rolls and know it. IP: Logged |

First of all, if you know your dog has an aggression problem why would you want to put another dog in the mix? You should get a book on dog behavior and first understand why your older dog has this problem. Is it teritorial? Is it jelousy of affection? Is it lack of socialization? Does your dog know its place in the pack? Is you dog an alpha male? What type of training have you done with this dog? Does the dog listen well to your commands (right away)? There are soooo many reasons why this could be happening and it would be best for you to address that problem before putting an ingocent defensless puppy in there for your dog to have as lunch. I have an alpha male who is dog aggressive, but gets along great with puppies and females....however, when that puppy grows up...whatch out! NEVER leave the puppy un attended with this dog...even if they get along okay...they could start to fight over the simplest stare!!! IP: Logged |
