Tuck is from the pound and we think he's shepherd/boxer about 1 year old, but we're not sure. He has recently begun growling and showing his teeth at the same time as cuddeling or crawling closer to us. No bones or toys around, we don't understand if he's being mean or if he's not well. Please help us, we love him and want to take the best care of him, but don't understand... IP: Logged |

I'd seek the help of a behavior animal specialist. In the meantime, possibly saying a firm "no", and when he stops and you call him, reward with a treat. It's great I think that you want to work with this dog rather than get rid of him. He just may have been trained by someone or taunted which is why he behaves that way. Now it has to be undone. Who knows. He just may be the greattest dog....but I wouldn't have small children or other animals around him for now. Best wishes. IP: Logged |

Does he respond more aggressivley when you touch one certain area on his body? Maybe you are cuddling his head...most dogs do not like this, which could result in some aggression towards the person touching an area he does not want to be touched on. Since your dog is from the pound, you will definatley want to take a basic obedience class and learn who your dog is, what the dog already knows and doesn't know. Regarding the aggression, I would really need a lot more info to help you out through writing. It would greatly benefit you to take the dog to a behaviorist since it's aggression is directed towards family members and not strangers. A behaviorist will be able to tell you why this agression problem exists. Also if it is in one area that the dog seems to dislike being touched in, I would take the dog to a vet and see what the problem is. A dog can be aggressive over the simplest little problem when in pain. Can we blame them? They can't tell us "hey...my finger nail is broken...fix it please" instead they tell us when we accidently touch it and it hurts..some dogs will bite others will growl to give a warning. My poodle had this problem. Kind of does still with other people. She wanted no one to touch her back end. I believe she had a broken tail bone, as she has a bend or kink in it. Can anyone tell me if tails can be straightened maybe by a chiropractor for dogs. Anyway I desensitised her and would tell her no every time she jumped. Now she doesn't care. She doesn't like for just anyone to touch her though. I have a habit of rubbing the lower back by the tail. I often find myself doing this un-noticed. IP: Logged |
