First time I have hounds that love to run in the forests. I love letting them play but I found a tick on each of my Whippets and I am distraught ! I wonder how long they've been there. One of my dogs started acting tired today. We haven't been in the forests for a week. Could they have been on them that long? The ticks were about the size of a rizoto pasta. I removed them, while squirming. And I will take them to the vets tommorrow morning-but what could they have gotten from this and can they make us humans sick. What can I do to prevent this from happening again?IP: Logged |

Dogs and humans can get sick from ticks.I would get my dogs to the vet as asap. You need to get the on something like Frontline to keep flees and tick of of them. IP: Logged |

Dogs can get lime disease from ticks. If they are sick they could get some paralysis. It can be reverse if caught on time. Not sure if it can lead to death, possibly. IP: Logged |

Just keep the dogs bathed in a flea/tick shampoo at least every 2 weeks, check them after running in the woods, use a preventative that will help keep them off like was mentioned above, but the biggee is, don't go to the forest really. High grass contains a lot of these ticks, as well as trees. I use Repel-X oil used on my horses on my dobie all spring and summer, right after I bathe. No problems, ever. Including from those nasty gnats around the eyes. I dilute in a sprayer, 1/3 of the Repel-X oil, with water, mix it up, and spritz all over on those heavy days, and put some on my hand and gently put around the eyes and ears. Bugs love their pointed ears! You can get this stuff at Walmart or from a catalog company like Omaha Vet, Jeffers Vet Supply, like $9.50 for a quart. It goes a long way. Best wishes. IP: Logged |
