Our 12 year old dog is peeing in the house and creating an expensive mess. It's gotten so bad that now she is waking us up in the middle of the night to let her out, but sometimes she just goes. We've taken her to the vet, and all that comes out through exams are that she is acting this way because of old age. Putting her down is the option my parents are choosing, but I would like to make one more attempt to save her. She is a very sweet dog. ANY ADVICE would be greatly appreciated! Rumor or not: does it help an old dog to take her on daily walks to help build up bladder strength?

It's a good idea to take the dog on regualr daily walks unless she is decrepit and can't walk..then that would be crule.

If there is a medical condition where her bladder is too small or she has a bladder infection, then I understand why the dog is peeing in the house.

I personally would not put down my dog because it needs to pee....why not leave her outside at night or make sure you take her out before you go to bed.

I would only put down my dog if it were in serious pain and lived life un happy due to a medical condition.

Have you thought about buying her some diapers. They make them for dogs you know,or try putting her in a crate at night. You could also buy the puppy trainning pads.Just put her in somewhere like the bathroom at night and put some of the pads on the floor.
I would never but a dog down for using the bathroom in the house.

I too have an older dog ( 18yrs ) and she's deaf and mostly blind. She gets around pretty well though. She's been my pride and joy for many years.
About the last 8 months she's been pooping in the house.......I'm thankful it's the kind of poop that's firm enough to just pick-up without a trace. I believe she's at that point where she can't control her spinkter muscle any longer....like the people in the nursing homes.
Every once in awhile she will pee as well. I've been anticipating this since this is a part of old age.
I'm planning on getting a "puppy play-pen" and whenever I'm not around she will go in there with her bed and blanket.
Putting your best friend down because of "bed wetting" is ridiculous.

i agree with princess.. buy some doggy diapers.. buy some puppy wetting pads.. and put the dog in the bathroom at night with the pads..
if the dog still has a quality of life there is no reason to euthanize it.. go to your nearest petsmart or petco (or whichever pet store is your favorite) and ask for some help picking out supplies
i hope this works for your parents..

Hi, I read your issue with your older dog. I had to put my 16 yr old Cockapoo down in Jan. She too was having bathroom issues in the last few months of her life. For your dog's sake and yours, please have your dog fully checked out by a vet. Blood work, xrays and all. If your dog was house trained her whole life, and now is having problems....she may be very ill. If your parents are fed up of all the messes.....imagine how the dog feels knowing she's doing something that is making her family mad, and she can't help it. Please have her checked soon.
