I have an aqauintance who has a 1 1/2 year old male Beagle. Both her and her husband work full time and their 14 year old daughter and 6 year old son are in school all day. The Beagle is left in a large fenced backyard all day by himself. He is provided with toys and chew things but still digs, and generally does the stuff a bored dog does. When in the house, he chews things up, mostly stuff that belongs to the woman. Her son is very attached to the dog, but she feels he needs a home where he will have alot more attention. We talked about what his needs are, whats lacking, and that perhaps her choice in breeds was not a good one. She likes large dogs and wants a couch potato. My question is...Do I encourage her to find him a new home where he will be getting the attention he needs or do I try to educate her about those needs and help her to work through the issues with the goal being they keep the dog? If the answer is to find the dog a home that better fits him...do I help her find a large dog that is more the couch potato personality that she says is more what she would like? I understand high energy dogs, and dogs that need a job, I have an Aussie mix and a Catahoula, I am home most of the day and work with them daily, we are involved in flyball and agility and 4-H with our dogs, so I know what it means to be involved and put in the time. I also understand not everyone is interested in all of that, any comments or advice would be appreciated.
