My boyfriend got me a Golden Cocker Spaniel for Xmas. He absulutely adorable and his manners are impeccable. Yes, he does have the odd accident and recenty he has taken to pulling up the carpet but other than those normal things hes very well behaved. My friends and family marvel at how good he is.

When he goes outside he does play and run around and chase birds, the normal activity for a pup, but when he is inside he seems really lazy and spends a lot of time lying around laying in front of the fire sleeping.

Im worried because this is the first dog Ive ever had that has had good manners and is fully registered to a Kennel Club. Every other dog ive ever had as a child or teenager has been really playful and wild.
Im wondering is it normal for a pup to be so lazy and sleepy all the time.

I might mention that he spends about three hours alone in the house every day but I leave the tv or radio on and alternate his toys daily. I dont want to sound obsessional about him but Im worried in case he might be depressed or something.

Your puppy sounds very similar to mine. My shih poo is now almost 11 months old and behaves beautifully. All of my friends and family tease me that they are going to take her home with them since they've never seen a small dog with such an amazing personality. She is full of love and a very happy puppy. When we go outside she loves to run and jump and play with toys, people and other dogs; but inside she is very well behaved. Every now and then she gets a little cooky and runs around "attacking" her stuffed animals but for the most part she sleeps or cuddles up with whomever is home. Where does your puppy sleep when people are home? Mine almost always sleeps in a room with people, telling me that she wants to around us and is happy not depressed.
I really hope this helps you a little bit

Perry Lover, I doubt your pup would be depressed with the love you are giving it.Animals vary in behaviour as do humans. Also it'svery cold over there (unlike here in Australia where we are sweltering) and once he's found the fire he's not going to want to move. As long as he gets plenty of fresh air and exercise which he seems to be doing, If he is eating and drinking well, that's a good indication of his wellness. See how he goes, and when the weather fines up with no inside fires, he may well perk right up.
As for accidents, it is unusual for a pup to outgrow that until they are at least 7 months.
