Our 11 year old sammy has developed a "condition" of not releasing fecal matter totally which then sticks to her coat. We have hand washed the area, had our groomer shave the hair in the area but to no avail. We love her dearly but it is hard to love the smell. Any ideas???

Does this dog have loose or watery stool? Stool should be firm but not hard and well formed and if it is shouldnt cause this problem. I guess Im a little confused on what you mean by "not releasing fecal matter totally". Is the dog constipated?

Sounds like a loss of muscle control in a sense, but I too am wondering if you mean constipation..? Now if it is sticking, I would shave off all the hair in the area, and apply vaseline to facilitate ease on the surrrounding skin. Your dog is a senior, and with that comes new changes in habits, oftentimes requiring owners give that little extra measure of attention we didn't have to before. ASk your vet also his/her opinion on the matter, making sure no disease entity exists for this latest change in bowel habits. God bless.
