PLEASE HELP.
MY HUSBAND FOUND A DOG ON OUR PORCH IN APRIL, HE IS A MIX BREED. ABOUT 12 POUNDS. HE IS 3 YEARS OLD AND HE IS A MIXED TERRIER. HE IS LITTLE THING. WE TRIED TO FIND THE OWNER BUT TO NO AVAIL. OUR LUCK BECAUSE WE CANNOT PART FROM HIM. HE CHECK OUT OK AT THE VET. BUT NO ONE SEEMS TO BE ABLE TO HELP US WITH THE FEEDING. WE TRIED EVERYTHING TO FEED HIM DOG FOOD, BUT HE WILL NOT EAT. WE EVEN LET IT SIT THERE AND SO DID HE. WE FINALLY FOUND OUT WHAT HE EATS. CHICKEN. CHICKEN, CHICKEN. I WANT TO TRAIN HIM TO EAT DOG FOOD BECAUSE HE WON'T EAT ANYTHING EXCEPT COOKED MEAT. I TRIED TO MIS VEGETABLES IN IT,BUT HE EATS AROUND IT. I KNOW IT IS NOT NUTRITIONAL BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO. HE IS A FRIENDLY HOUSE TRAINED DOG. I WASN'T FOND OF DOGS AT FIRST AND NOW THINKING OF GETTING HIM A PLAYMATE FROM THE ANIMAL SHELTER.
HELP! ANY ADVICE FOR A NOVICE DOG OWNER

THANK YOU

Well, it seems this dog is either tricking you into giving him what he wants or that is all he was fed before. Maybe try buying a small bag to start with, of a very good dog food and put in some broth.Fat Free of course. Sometimes you may need to do the waiting game. He will eat when he is hungry. My sister dog did the same thing and she finally started to eat her kibble. You just need to make sure that you don't get caught up in giving in to his every little whim. For the good of his health, you need to be firm and keep giving him whats good for him. Otherwise he will rule you. Maybe put alittle chopped chicken in with the broth to start and slowly start to lower the amount of the chicken. I always give mine about 2 teaspoons of broth with their kibble. They love it. I do it because its the only way to camophlage the glucosamine that I give my poodle. But of course I just have to give it to my other dog too. No favorites. My poodle loves veggies in her food, while my other dog eats around them occasionally eating them. Little does he know they are in his Innova kibble.

I strongly agree with puttin510,

We had the same problem and this is exactly what we did. It
took a while but eventually he started eating whatever is on the plate.

When you remain firm in your approach, they will come....LOL!! Agree with the others! Unless of course he is one stubborn one, and then, well, all's we can say, is, he's got you well trained...LOL!! Nice to see he got a loving home, God bless for saving him.

Dear Guest, ditto on everything they posted above to you. Another thing I might try if all else fails is add a lil bit of cottage cheese mixed with the dry food. With young pups I use the one that is 4% fat but I believe they make another one with lower fat content..under the circumstances and for a short time if you cant find lower than 4% the(your dog) should love it. With my new pup that is 6 months now, back when I started him on it I made the mistake by calling it Ice cream, I say that name he runs to frig, but other thing is he also thinks that is his Call name ( )
Good luck
Doc~

Here is a link that you may find helpful: http://www.westielovers.com/westieworld/picky.html

If all else fails there are some homecooked-type canned dog foods that you could try like:
Spots Stew (www.halopets.com)
Active Life (www.activelifepp.com)

I had similar problem with my two dogs, both previously homed elsewhere. They wouldn't eat tinned or dried dog food. Eventually I found a fozen dog food product which in the Uk is made by Prize Choice - visit www.prizechoice.co.uk. I've not had any trouble since (3 years). The product comes in handy portion sizes and you just bung it in the microwave for 10 mins (from frozen) mix it with a little cold water and hey-presto a warm body temperature meat feed that is gobbled up straight away. The also eat some dry food too now and are both very healthy. Hope this helps. Cheers!! Carol
