I HAVE AN AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIOR. SHE SOMETIMES WILL DO THINGS SHE IS NOT SUPPOSED TO. SHE IS NORMALLY A VERY WELL BEHAVED DOG. I ALSO KNOW THIS CAN BE A TOUCHY DOG. SO I AM ASKING ADVISE ON WHAT I SHOULD DO TO LET HER KNOW THIS IS BAD WITHOUT MAKING HER MEAN OR GETTING MAD AT ME. EX. SHE JUST HAD PUPPIES AND SOMETIMES SHE WILL GROWL OR BE SNAPPY. OR WILL PEE WHEN SHE KNOWS THIS IS NOT WHERE SHE IS SUPPOSED TO GO. I AM HOPING IT IS JUST BECAUSE SHE HAD PUPPIES. I TOLD HER SHE WAS "BAD" FOR URINATING ON THE CARPET AND SHE GROWLED AT ME. (OF COURSE HER PUPPIES WERE RIGHT BEHIND ME). WHAT ARE DANGER SIGNS OF THIS TYPE OF BREED AND WHAT DO I DO TO DISCIPLINE HER?

I have to ask:
Why on earth would you breed this dog when you apparently dont know much about the breed?

YOU KNOW WHAT "NERN"..... I WANTED SOMEONES ADVISE ON HOW I SHOULD GO ABOUT THIS SITUATION. NOT SOMEONE TO KNOCK ON ME! I DO KNOW ALOT ABOUT THIS BREED FOR YOUR INFORMATION! JUST BECAUSE IT IS A PIT DOES NOT MEAN I WOULDNT ASK THIS QUESTION ABOUT ANOTHER BREED!!!!!YOU CANNOT ASK OR SAY ANYTHING ON THIS POLL ANYMORE WITHOUT PEOPLE LIKE YOU PUTTING YOUR 2 CENTS IN. INSTEAD WHY DON'T YOU ASK ME HOW MY DOG GOT PREGNANT! MY NEXT DOOR NIEGHBORS WATCHED MY DOG FOR A WEEK......MIND YOU HE HAS A PIT BULL THAT IS K-9 UNIT TRAINED AND HE ALSO IS A SHERIFF AND AND HIS DOG GOT HER PREGNANT. SO BEFORE YOU START QUESTIONING ME ABOUT MY DOG GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT BUDDY! YOU
"APPARENTLY" DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT IT MEANS TO GIVE ADVISE YO SOMEONE! FOR ANYONE ELSE THAT CAN GIVE ME A POSITVE REPLY CAN YOU RESPOND?

I don't want to get into this or pick a fight, merely to share my experience re a female poodle we once had.

sassy_pants, i don't think it is a breed specific question. Females tend to get cranky when someone is around the puppies. We once had a poodle (some 20 years ago), a very lovely and friendly dog. She had 7 puppies and she wouldn't let anyone even get near. She was growling and moaning at anyone who gets too close to the puppies. It is just the mama bear thing.

However, because it is a pit (and as previously discussed- THEY ARE capable of inflicting some serious damage when pissed) you don't want anyone getting too close ....so I’d be careful with the kids. Do me a personal favour and keep the kids away.

I think that this is a tough call, we had a pit as I was growing up. It is true that alot of dogs will be extra possesive with their babies. I am wondering if she was that way before she had her pups. In any case I think, given that she is in the frame of mind that she is in, she needs to be delt with in a kind but firm way. Pits need to have a firm but kind hand, so they don't get out of hand and freak out the whole neighborhood. I would not get in between her babies. Maybe use treats as a way for her to learn to listen. This is really way out of my league I am used to small dogs. I have a poodle that has acted that way, but it is not as scarey as a larger dog. It boils down to if you let a dog growl you down and you back away. Being that it is your dog. Your dog thinks that it is the ruler of your household. That needs to change. That is what I have learned since owning my alpha female abused poodle. It is not your fault at all that you dog got pregnant at your negligent neighbors. Maybe you did not know that she was in heat. I think that your neighbor must have known being that he had her there. Females do bleed when in heat. Or maybe he was just like alot of men and did not notice. No offence to all of you men out there, My husband only notices what he is interested in.

Sassy -
I apologize. It did cross my mind that maybe you had rescued this dog already pregnant or something to that effect after I had posted. Most dogs no matter what breed are very protective of their babies.

Well here is my 3 cents for all its worth..its ironic though as I read all these pit stories, a huge tug of war here. People attacking other people for their opinions, interesting concept. I feel like we are all running around this message board nipping at each other
Ok so question being, Sassay: What do I do to discipline her? Maybe a positive reinforcment with her might be more in order since she just had puppies...If she allows you to handle the pups, when she growls I would hide all the pups like in the bedroom, this way she will know something has been taken from her..now I don't mean hide them for a hour I mean for just a few minutes, have her help you find them. Maybe this will take the edge off her and her growling at you..knowing that you have a part in the pups well being also. I have used this method before along time ago on a female chihuahua she would growl, try to bite so forth. So while she went out to go (P) I hid the pups. It took a few days but her growling, trying to bite all stopped..I did buy a little muzzle just in case..
Now the part where she growls at you for going on the carpet, I take it she has freedom of the house along with the pups? Before I can suggest anything on that one, when I showed the Working class breed, most breeders kept them in more of a closed area, when they had pups. When she does growl you
might want to discipline her with a appropriate replacement behavior, when she growls put her in her crate.(For like 2 minutes) Dogs have no sense of time, just like the old saying when you leave the house and forget something and come right back in the dog acts like you been gone all day..Most things you correct a dog with or things you do to correct only takes minutes.

Doc's ~ 6 cents

Oh and I forgot my last cent, as far as your neighbor goes I dont care if he is a sheriff or the president, that is totally irresponsiblity on his part, since he was watching your dog for a week. I agree with nern to the point I dont feel she should have to apologize to you, she asked you a question and you took her head off for it. Out of curiosty though I bet that your neighbor is getting a pup from ya? If that answer is Yes..then I find the total breeding and pups accident or not.. Should not of happened..
Doc~
P.S. Should I hide so you dont bite my head off "grinning"

THANKS FOR ALL OF YOUR ADVISE. NO I WILL NOT YELL AT YOU DOC. ALL I WANTED WAS SOME POSTIVE ADVISE. ALSO TO YOU NERN....THANK YOU. YES MY NEIGHBOR IS IN THE WRONG FOR THIS. BACK TO MY DOG....SHE DOES HAVE THE FREEDOM TO RUN THE HOUSE. I DO NOT CHAIN HER OUT SIDE NOR DO I HAVE HER IN A DOG HOUSE. SHE DOES HAVE A CRATE AT HOME. WHEN I LEAVE OR AM BUSY(SHOWER, COOKING ECT.) SHE IS NEVER LEFT ALONE WITH THE KIDS. AND MOST OF THE TIME SHE IS NOT IN HER CRATE EXCEPT FOR BEDTIME.(PUPS ARE OLD ENOUGH NOT TO DRINK HER MILK) SHE DID NOT DO THIS BEFORE SHE HAD HER PUPS ... SO I AM THINKING IT IS BECAUSE OF THEM. AS FOR MY NIEGHBOR... HE SOLD HIS HOUSE AND IS OUT OF STATE AND ALREADY HAS 4 DOGS(A PIT, 2 POMS, AND A LAP DOG OF SOME SORT). IT NEVER OCCURED TO ME TO CRATE HER FOR HER BAD BEHAVIOR. FOR I WANTED THE "CRATE" TO BE A GOOD EXPERIENCE FOR HER. I THINK THIS IS A GOOD IDEA TO PUT HER IN THE CRATE WHEN BAD(SHE NORMALLY A GOOD DOG). I WAS JUST A LITTLE SCARED BECAUSE I KNOW THE PREVIOUS OWNERS BEAT HER WITH A BELT. SHE WAS A YEAR OLD WHEN I GOT HER. YES DOC..... NERN DID JUST ASK ME A QUESTION BUT, IT SHOULD HAVE SOUNDED NOT SO SARCASTIC. THANKS AGAIN! I FOUND ALL OF YOUR ADVISE VERY HEPLFUL!

HEY SASSY,
MOST FEMALES ARE VERY PROTECTIVE OF THEIR OFFSPRING.THIS IS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT,BUT YOU DO NEED TO REMIND HER WHO IS THE BOSS.I HAD A FEMALE THAT WOULD GROWL IF YOU CAME TO CLOSE TO HER PUPS...WHAT I DO IS EVERY TIME SHE WANTED TO GROWLE AT ME I WOULD POP HER ON THE END OF HER NOSE AND SAY "NO GROWLE".IT TOOK A LITTLE WHILE ,BUT IT WORKED.
AS FOR PEEING ON THE CARPET,SHE IS MARKING HER BOUNDRIES SO NO OTHER DOG WILL GET CLOSE TO HER PUPPIES OR SHE STILL HAS NOT GOTTIN BACK CONTROL OF HER BLATTER.
I DO HAVE A QUESTION .DO YOU TRUST THIS DOG?IF SHE FEELS THAT YOU DO NOT TRUST HER,SHE WILL NOT TRUST YOU.IF YOU NEED ANY MORE HELP JUST EMAIL ME ANYTIME.
THANKS FOR TRYING TO SAVE THE BREED..

You could check for a bladder infection, sometimes they can't help urinating wherever they are because the urge to pee is so strong.
