Puppies copy their mothers actions. The mother would clean up after the pups when they would make their messes. Now I guess you just need to keep telling him no. I know this just from reading other posts from another froum I visit. My one year old dog usde to do that and we would just make a big deal about it and he finally stopped. We keep an eye on him when we walk him, he has the occasional weakness and will sniff and bbe tempted. A quick pull of the leash and a No stops him. Sometimes when an animal eats its food does not fully digest and it still has a good smell to other animals, that is why some dogs eat it.

I suggest changing the puppys food gradually to a maybe lamb and rice formula, alot of different companies make. I would stay away from any corn base foods..

Minnie -
First thing you should do is change him over to a better quality food. The better digested the food is the less tempting it will be for him to eat it. You could also try one of the products made to stop this behavior such as "deter" or "forbid" which are supposed to make the feces less desirable. My dog also had this problem when she was a puppy (I was also feeding puppy chow at the time)...she grew out of it - me changing her food was probably helpful too.
