Does anyone know how big your backyard has to be to keep a Border Collie? I can only have an outdoor dog, so I cant get a malte-poo. (
How much exercise do they need? Any replys will help.

Hi mini, I did some research for you and from I gather this breed of dog is very intelligent, and a hard working dog. He thrives on games and is willing to please, but he needs constant physical and mental activity to a be a well balanced dog. He is very agile and has well proportioned body. It said they are well suited as a household pet and especially good on homes with energetic children. I believe there is quite of bit a brushing and grooming of their hair, and only to bath as necessary. Their origin is Great Britain. Their natural instint is to herd. They can run up to 80km in a day. They work sheep, depending on its breeding some of them can be uncertain at times and maybe a little spooky. As a pup they say its best to be some what soft spoken to them for these two things not to happen. If left for long periods of times they can develope compulsive tendencies, such as digging, chewing. As far as health isssues the main health problems that currently affect the BC is Progressive Retinal Atrophy (RPA), Hip Dysplaysia (HD) and a very small percentage are known to be carriear of Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (CL)another conciston affecting some BC's isepilepsy, and there is no health screening done to date. The condition is more comman in English and American lines. From this knoweldge not so much in Australian and New Zealand line..As far as fencing and how big all I could find is "WELL FENCED" if you yard is small I am sure the BC would love to go go lots of walks, but to me sounds like the BC might love to run too. I will keep do some more research for you if you want.
Doc~ hope some of this helps BTW my sis had one his name was Wrennie...Smart dog he was, didnt want to run lol all he wanted to do is go in the car with em )

Doc Hellday, that was very good. Border collies are beautiful dogs. You said it all so well. Thses dogs definatley need to be doing something, some sort of job. My neighbors dog not a b/collie but he keeps eating thru the fence because of pure boredom. If mini pony pal gets one she will need to keep him stimulated mentally. They are a huge responability. I noticed once while browsing thru the shelters online in the U.K. that border collies were one of the top dogs brought in to the shelter. The people that get them are not up for what it is required to care for these dogs. Thye will litterally tear things up if bored. They are highly intelligant and can't stand to do nothing. Again doc you are right on.

Mini pony, Are your fences wood? Because my terrier mix which I beleive he is mixed with b/collie can easily jump and climb a 4 foot chain link type of fence. So I know he could easily clear a six foot one. Wood od blick would be better. But do't be surprised if he does clear any fence. If a dog gets board, they will try anything.
