I heard that people dock dogs tails if they are hunting, so that branches or burrs dont get stuck in it.

Hi-
Our puppy had his tail tied rather than docked, and at 24 hours old, I have heard that this is nowhere nearly as painful for the puppy as docking at 3 days, but I would talk to a vet about your concern with long term.
My rottie passed away recently, I think that in a few months when I am ready I am going to put the word out to the local shelters that next time there is a rott puppy to give me a call, I am not interested in doing shows or anything, but if I were to have the choice I think I would keep his tail, if you are looking to have a show dog though I am pretty sure that they are supposed to be docked.
When is your puppy due? Rotts are awesome dogs, but make sure you spend a LOT of time with him, socialize him, etc- they love people and playing with other dogs, I am lucky because I work from home, Max was never really by himself for very long. You will be amazed at how smart your puppy is, too- I am going to stop now or else I will ramble about stories about Max for hours, but awesome choice in breed, they are great! Let me know if you want to see some pictures-
Andrea

I just read something from a vet in London who says that leaving the tail alone will prevent joint problems. I dont see how a tail realtes to this but whatever. I expect my puppy by Christmas and he wont be doing any shows, just a new family member

I once saw a vet show on TV and they were saying there that cutting a dog’s
tail makes the dog unhappy... Dogs use their tail to talk and signal things to other dogs.

if the vet docks the tail while the puppy is very young the dog doesnt seem to mind loosing its tail more than being held upsidedown to do it.
