Hi, I recently adopted a three legged dog (3 year old Kelpie/Greyhound mix) who is full of energy. He gets around fine with his missing limb, but I worry about the stress that could be building up on his legs (especially the solo front leg). He loves to go on long walks and he even likes to go jogging. I've noticed that his front paw seems to have a lot of wear on the nails and pads. I'd hate to keep him inactive, since he is a very healthy, energetic, and hyper dog, but I wonder is it is okay for him to be the active dog that he is. Any suggestions or experience with these things? IP: Logged |

How nice of you to have adopted this dog! When I lived in another state and had a farm, there was a resident cat that had 2 limbs missing from the same side. It probably had been from an earlier field machinery accident I thought. This cat got around so well, and was so loving. The renters all would feed and care for it one after another! AS for the dog, perhaps a bootie of leather could be fashioned or bought for him so he doesn't overstress the paw tissue, but I wonder if it would make him clumsy, cause they are pretty adept these remarkable animals. In the very least, I would apply ointment to condition the paw, like udder cream. They have little rig devices for amputees, should he eventually need one, as in these sites: God bless. http://www.handicappedpets.com/ http://www.inch.com/~dogs/disableddogs.html IP: Logged |
