Care of puppy: loneliness

Dogs are social animals, and happiest when they are allowed to be a companion. They are happy being with other dogs, but elated to be with their human friends.

If dogs could have their way, they would choose to always be at the side of their master, but, unfortunately, this is often an impossibility.

Though all dogs feel lonely when isolated, the puppy is not only lonely but devastated. When left alone, he feels the whole world has come to an end. The loneliness is sometimes unbearable and he will wail to show his discontent.

NEVER discipline him for his unhappiness. He is crying only for your love and closeness which he strongly needs.

The ideal solution to keep a puppy occupied when you must be away is, of course, another puppy, or, at least, another animal friend nearby. But, not always can we have several pets, and only one deems sufficient.

Ideally, give your puppy special times during the day for interactive play, petting, feeding, and companionship.

But at bedtime, or times you must leave him, see that he has his own special bedding area, toys that make noise, and chew toys.

Most puppies and dogs will spend hours gnawing on rawhide treats or big beef bones (get these in the meat department at the grocery store, the ones with bits of meat are a BIG HIT, and cook them thoroughly in the microwave). This provides occupation for days!

Leave the tv or radio on at a pleasing volume, not too loud. Programs with voices and classical music seem to be favorites.

Put a ticking alarm clock in the puppy's bed (be sure it is not set to go off!).

Put an article of old clothing (not laundered) of YOURS in the puppy's bed. He will sense your presence.

Run some cassette tapes with your voice on them.

Puppies like big stuffed animals, especially those that look like dogs and bears. Those with big eyes are adored. They will often curl up with them when napping.

When puppy must be alone, be sure he has a fresh bowl of water at all times, and a special place for his "bathroom" activities.

Most of all, try NOT to leave him alone any more than necessary, for a dog's nature is NOT to be alone, but to be a protector and a FRIEND.
