Here's the deal in short.... I been with my girlfriend for about a year, and we are going to move in together soon...the only problem is that her cat is used to sleeping in the bedroom, and that is NOT GONNA HAPPEN WHEN I MOVE IN, because she walks around on me all through the night and she won't settle down. (I'm a very lite sleeper) I have gone through countless nights without sleep staying at my GF's house. So finally I told her that if she wants me to stay at her house any more that the cat would have to sleep outside the bedroom, so that I can sleep. She said no problem. So I thought great, now I can get some sleep......hahaha yeah right that would be to easy.... So, the cat is now locked outside the bedroom at night.....however......now the HOWLING starts and doesn't stop till about 4am and then starts back up at 6am till we get up. So....once again, endless nights of no sleep. I'm about ready to SNAP!!!!. What do I do to get her (the cat, not the GF) to SHUT UP, so that I can sleep. I searched this topic here but all I really came up with is.... 2. put her somewhere else where you cant hear her. (The house is to small I hear her anywhere in the house) 3. change her feeding habits.. (did that, and it didn't change anything) 4. Get rid of the cat... (can't, girlfriend likes the cat to much)
Can I just use a dog's shock coller? Any help would be great, I don't want her cat to split us apart, but if it doesn't stop, it just might. Thanks IP: Logged |

I would NOT recommend putting a dog shock collar on a cat. All you can really do is ignore the howling and it will eventually stop once the cat learns that howling is not going to get it into the bedroom. This will take some time though. How long has it been so far since the cat has been banned from the bedroom? IP: Logged |

No you can not use a dog shock collar on a cat! Jeez! My advice to you (advice you probably don't want to hear), is don't move in with your girlfriend. Perhaps, others on this site will have more sound advice for you. It just appears to me that you could care less about the cat and that's not going to be good for the cat or your relationship with your girlfriend. However, I think it's good that you're trying to get advice to try and resolve the issue. I hope someone on this site can help. IP: Logged |

I don't really mean a real Dog Shock collor, but is there something like that for cats? I like her cat, I just don't like it in the bedroom. It's been about a month since we locked the cat out. I guess I'll just try waiting longer. Should I leave all the lights off in the living room, so that the cat is in the dark. I got the cat a nightlight so that it would have something else to do instead of howling, but I guess it didn't matter, because she still howls. IP: Logged |

Hi! I can understand your problem because I am a light sleeper, too, and when we got our second cat, he kept me awake all night. We locked him into the living room because he scratched on our bedroom door all night. In the living room, he meowed for what seemed most of the night to us. I love him, and I felt awful about this, but I simply couldn't find restful sleep with him under and over my cover, licking my legs and trying to catch my toes etc. What we did, was the following: First, we feed him in the evening, play and cuddle with him, so that he will be tired by bedtime. Then, we "weaned him off": My husband slept on a make-shift bed in the frontroom with him for a few nights. Then we made the bed, but he ended up never coming. Then we put the bed away but "forgot" a cover on the sofa. That's where he sleeps now, peacefully. He still whines when we close doors in the house, but at night he has accepted that he will sleep by himself. So much so that he doesn't even try to run out when we happen to come in during the night! I think, your posting on this website shows that you care about your girlfriend and her cat, and I understand completely, how bad life is without proper sleep. Good luck for the future for the three of you! Claudia IP: Logged |

Well, I'll have to try feeding it late at night adn run it around the house to tire it out. Those little laser pointers I think are more intertaing for me than they are for the cat. I bought a nice little cat bed from the pet store for her, but she doesn't seem to use it. I'm also in the process of building a new cat tower hoping that she'll use it to sleep in or on. Thanks for the advise. IP: Logged |

For the cat bed put it where she normally sleeps even if its on a chair and she'll start using it. After a couple of weeks start moving it slowly towards where you would like her to sleep. IP: Logged |
