Our 17 year old female cat up until wednesday of last week was very active and ate normally. Since then she has not been eating and will only drink water. I have given her caned food in case she was having problems with the dry food that she has been eating for several years. The only thing she will do is lick the liquid off the food and then go back to lay down. she will only walk a little bit and then lay down for a short time and then go into living room. I think she is just old and giving up. any suggestions???????? IP: Logged |

Is your cat sneezing and/or coughing? Maybe snuffling? The same thing just happened to our 13 year old male cat. After 4 days of not eating and sleeping in out-of-the-way places, I took him to the vet's. The vet said his temperature was high, indicating infection/inflamation. His nose had a mucos-y discharge on one side. Orbax (antibiotic) was prescribed to kill the infection. Since he could not smell, eating was not interesting. 2 days of antibiotics and he is eating a little. We'll see. The vet also offered that a heart condition could be causing the sleepiness. We'll see how the antibiotics do and hopefully not have to go for the $300 MRI for his heart. Take care of your elderly cat, take her to the vet's. It is well worth it. IP: Logged |

My oldest cat is 17 and has just been diagnosed with CRF. I suggest you take your cat to the vet and have a blood panel workup done on her. This may show what the problem is and then your vet can suggest treatment. Good luck and I hope it isn't serious. Darlene IP: Logged |
