how do they work? what do they put it in your cat/dog? is it painful to the animal? could it ever make them sick? if your animal gets lost, what do they do? how do they even know that the animal has a mircochip. and finally how do they scan them? just wondering. i know a few of you have your animal mircochipped, are you happy with the results? maybe this would be good for jackiepoo. it might put my mind at ease when he gets out of the house. Microchips are completely safe for pets, and doesn't make them sick - you can't even see it once they put it in. It's very tiny, the size of a grain of rice. They inject the microchip into the animals with a needle like syringe. I don't think it's painful at all, I think it feels the same as when they get a needle? I had my cats microchipped when they were put under to be neutered, so I am not sure how it would work while they were awake. All of the local shelters and animal catchers have a special scanner that is made to check animals for microchips. Anytime a dog or cat comes into the shelter, they scan it. The microchip will contain your name, address and contact numbers so they can call you if your pet is found. Microchipping is a painless practice it would be like them having a vaccination like mandy says its like a grain of rice all yours and the dogs information is stored on this chip so if you dog strays and is picked up the shelters will scan the animals body its usually placed at the back of the neck. When scanned it brings up your telephone number that way the shelter can ring you to let you know your animal has been found. It is well worth having this done just incase your animals manage to escape then you will know he/she will hopefully be returned to you safely all my dogs are microchipped its quick and simple. mike IP: Logged |

I had my two kitties microchipped when they were 3 months old. It really is awesome, and it doesnt hurt at all. My local SPCA did it for nothing (it was included in the adoption)....There are NO side effects that I am aware of. IP: Logged |

I've only had one of my dogs microchipped. I was there when it was done and it did appear to hurt but only for a split second. She yelped when they inserted it but appeared to be in no pain afterwords. It was like getting a shot. IP: Logged |

Microchips are tiny, like rice. They are placed above the animal's neck. It most likely hurts when being put in (like a shot), but after that they don't hurt at all and have no side effects. Each microchip has its own number. When a lost cat is found, they will use a special "reader" to see what the number is, and then will contact the number's corresponding address. The reader doesn't hurt either, it doesn't even touch the animal. I would highly, highly reccomend you microchip your pet. IP: Logged |
