I have two male cats who are 1 year old. They have suddenly started clawing the furniture. They have a good size scratch post and also go out side for part of the day.How can I stop them doing this? Please don't suggest having claws removed as I don't agree with this as they love climbing trees and fences where we live.I also keep their claws trimmed.I don't think it is boredom as it happens when they come in or have just woken up.Any advise welcome.Thanks.

They make these plastic things you can put on their claws to stop them from scratching. I can't remember the name, but if you do a search for declaw alternitives, the name should come up. I haven't used them, but I figured it was worth a shot. Good Luck!!!!

Thanks for your reply but I am sure they wouldn't let me put them on their feet or they would chew them off.

I keep a water bottle in my livingroom. Whenever my kitten would scratch the furniture or play in the plants I would squirt her once. This has worked for all my kittens. I think I've had to use it only once in the past 2 months when she forgot that the plants that hang down are not play toys :-)

I've never tried it on anything other than kittens but it may work.

Well, I tried the spray bottle method with my kitten, and it never works!!! She just keeps on,maybe its just her personality, but if your cats let you trim their claws ( you said you keep them short),I'm sure you could get the plastic on. It's a better option than the declaw. Good Luck again.

I think you are talking about softpaws and the vet puts them on.

Sharron...mine have also recently started scratching each side of my couch! They've never really bothered it before as I used a squirt gun to teach them not too. Im pretty sure they are doing this because they are in desperate need of new scratching posts...theirs are pretty worn out.
Anyway, two days ago I went and got some double sided sticky tape and put it at both ends where they were scratching and they have'nt scratched it since!
You could also try Feliway spray - www.feliway.com or Sticky Paws - www.stickypaws.com (double sided sticky tape is cheaper and probably works just as well).

Thank you all for your help.I am going to try the double sided tape first and maybe the water. They are little monsters (but I love them dearly) as they both use their scratch post and the furniture.
