As I have posted a few days ago, my 2 kitties are getting spayed and neutered at 8 a.m. Monday morning. The vet told me they can not eat or drink ANYTHING after 10 p.m. Sunday night. Does this sound right? I understand about the not eating, but not DRINKING as well?? IP: Logged |

That is right. If they have food or water in their stomache it can make them sick when they go under anesthesia. If they just get a little bit it's okay, but it's better just to pick it up. When they come home once they are up and about you can give them water, then later some soft food. Even after the surgery they can get sick from food if they aren't fully up and about. IP: Logged |

I just got my 2 fixed 2mos ago. My vet told me no food after 7pm, but they were still allowed to have water. I guess each vet is different. IP: Logged |

Hi that sounds about right but the cat needs to drink only a small amount though as i have to agree some animals like humans will throw up when given the anesthesia. My mum gave her cats a little drink and it did them no harm but each vet and each animal is different IP: Logged |

yep.. sounds correct, same thing goes for humans (that is why a women in labor may only have ice chips; in case an emergency c-section must be performed) some dr.'s will say no food 12 hours before and no liquids 10 hours before.. so food is allowed until 10pm and water until 12am, but different stroke for different folks IP: Logged |
