Hi there, I'm the caretaker of a 10 year old female cat. About a week ago, she stopped eating and jaundice set in about 1 day ago. She's very dehydrated. I've taken her to the Vet with my last 40 dollars. That was enough to buy me an estimate for further treatment. They sent me home with antibiotics in case she has an infection (because the liver is failing for some reason). My question is: I bought pedialyte and it says 300 mls per *day* for 6.6 pounds of person. Because it's for kids, not pets, right? Anyway...a website advising pedialyte for cats advised 2-4 mls per pound of cat, per *hour*.... IP: Logged |

I would go with the *hour*as your cat is so ill,Im not sure, but I dont think there is anything in pedialyte that will hurt your cat.I work in a vets office and I can tell you that even with treatment, cats with this condition seem to just get worse and worse. It is common in older cats and is often their clock shutting down, saying it is time to go.I agree treatment is too expensive,it just isnt fair.10 really isnt THAT old for a cat though, but it varies,we get cats just 6 or 7 with this.what has your cat been eating? up until last week, she was eating ordinary cat food (whiskas, Cat chow), last night she took a bit of wet food and some water on her own. Today she hasn't been doing that at all. I've been giving her the pedialyte as directed by the website since 10 p.m tonight. It might be just in my head, but she seems a bit friskier since then. I didn't think 10 was that old for a cat, either. thanks for responding. IP: Logged |
