Ok, jack loves to go outside. we have a little deck on the side of my apartment that he loves to sit on. I have hes favorite chair out there for him to sit and watch the people, birds and what ever else he likes to look at out there!! its totally safe too, there is no way for him to get off of the deck and get loose or anything. but when i walk my dog he cries his little head off, he wants to go outside sooooo bad. but i am to scared to just let him out. what if he doesnt come back, what if he gets into a fight? what if he gets hit by a car, or what he cant find his way home?? i just couldnt let any of that stuff happen to him!!! and i would just die if it did!! but i want to make him happy, but the deck doesnt seem to do it anymore, i have tried to talk him out on a walk, the first time he hated it, but after a while started to walk around, the secound time was better but he still doesnt like the idea of a leash. any suggestion any help?? he WILL NOT be lead on a leash. what should i do!!!

also...side note.... he use to be a street cat, does that have anything to do with this NEED to go outside?? i feel so horrible. like hes not happy being at home anymore!!

I really think once a cat has a taste of the outdoors, it is very difficult to keep him confined. I share your fears of what could happen to him, since I feel the same way about my cats. They are indoor cats, but they have NEVER been outside. Ever.

Your guy, since he was a street cat, is more difficult. It's a decision only you can make. Weigh how much he wants to go outside with the risks of what could happen. Maybe try to get him used to a harness (I don't trust a collar on cats). It would take a LOT of time, but it may be worth it.

Or, if he REALLY wants to go outside, maybe it is worth it to him even if it means a shortened life. A short, happy life is better than a long, unhappy one. Maybe he is street-smart enough to be relatively safe. (My cats would be clueless.)

Only you can be the judge. Only you know your cat and can judge by his behavior what the best solution might be. There are tradeoff's either way.

Is your kitty fixed? My cat tried to dart out the door every chance he could until he was fixed. After that testosterone was gone, he never tried again. And my experience is that if you let your cat outside, he is at risk for getting hit by a car, getting sick, getting in a fight, etc. Eventually it may happen. Personally, I would be worried sick whenever he went out the door. Maybe try to get him more active while indoors so he enjoys his time inside more?? Just suggestions. Let us know what you decide

I know jack is street smart, and i know he could totally handle be outside, you know, but its like the mom in me. it would drive me nuts having him out there. i would worry the whole time he was gone. and if i didnt live in an apartment i might feel a little better about it, but with all the cars leaving at different times. it just scares me. but also it breaks my heart. you should hear him cry. i dont know what to do!! i think i might try walking him some more. i really want to get the harness, cuz the collar thing scares me too!! well i guess i will have to see, when i walk trike tonight he'll come with us, i'll see how he does and let ya'll know!

oh yeah, he is fixed. i was hoping that would calm him down all over. but it hasnt!! but also i dont really know how old he is. when i first got him i took him to the vet and they said he was about 9 months old, (i got him in feb.) i dont know much about cats so i dont know if his age is a factor in this little problem. but like ya'll said it might just be because he has been and once lived outside. we have all sorts of toys. his favorite is the ones that hang from the door. i have to change those out at least twice a week!!! well sorry to ramble on. thanks for ya'lls advice!! i'll keep you updated!

Cats that used to be street cats or outside cats want to go out more than cats that have always been inside. Depending on the cat you may not be able to keep him. In that case do everything you can to make him safe. Maybe you can leash train him and walk him with your dog. I saw a cat at Petsmart once that walked on a leash just like a dog. The guy even had a dog too.
