Hello. My mom has been raising a kitten for many weeks now since the mother abandon him. He is now 7 weeks old and recently started eating canned kitten food instead of his bottle. He is doing well and is very cute! The problem is that he often has diarrhea and his butt is often very red and swollen. What can we do? Thank you for your help! IP: Logged |

Hi There, the change from replacement formula to canned food is whats probably causing the diareah all animals get it when they started eating solids.. Are you using proper kitten food? If his bottom is sore which i can imagen it is with this problem... Make sure that he anal area is clean this way will help reduce infections using a warm damp cloth should keep this clean.... If You are at all worried a trip to the vet can put your mind at rest . keep us posted of his progress mike IP: Logged |

I had an orphaned kitten whose bottom was really irritated. My vet had me put Desitin on it. If the irritation persists, ask your vet about using some Desitin. IP: Logged |

Thank you for the responses! The food he's eating is specifically canned food for kittens. I will definitely see about trying some cooked chicken. He was wormed so that shouldn't be the problem. I will also check out about using Desitin. Thank you, again!! IP: Logged |

Just to add to Mike's comments: When they get diarrhea from a food change it usually clears up in a few days as they adjust to the new food. If the diarrhea persists more than 2-3 days or is really excessive, it might be caused by something else. IP: Logged |

Rocky went to the vet this afternoon. The vet didn't have any definite answers but his problems are likely because he's so far behind (since he wasn't raised by his kitty mother). Also, although he was eating kitten food on his own, he wasn't drinking, which was a problem. Anyway, we feel better knowing there's a vet involved now!! IP: Logged |
