Ok, im having a painful issue with my kitten Charlie. Hes very playful and when anyone gos to pick him up he trys to claw them. Hes not even 3 months old but im seriously thinking about trimming his nails. Im not going to let him outside(ever!) but im worried at his age he might get upset with me. Hes the most confusing feline i have ever owned in the personality area. So i guess the question is does anyone think i should wait until he is older and give him a chance to get out of the clawing habit or should i start trimming them now to get him used to it? I also never plan on declawing him so that will not work. Also his coat doesnt look healthy at all. He white with long fur and its very dry. I was wondering if it could be because the first part of his life he was so sick. ------------------ IP: Logged |

My kitten is 8 months old. In my opinion I would start early trimming nails. I have another cat who's nails I didn't trim as a kitten and now there is no way possible to keep her still. The kitten is used to it now and holds still while I do it. I only trim a bit off the sharp tip so I don't end up with scratches all over my hands when we play. She also uses to scratching post everyday to maintain her nails. IP: Logged |

Yes! Trim his nails! The earlier you start, the more used to it he will become. Also, kitten nails are soooo sharp - I found they would get them stuck in things and they can hurt themselves if they try to jump off something and are stuck to it with a claw or two.

I started trimming my kitten's nails when he was very young. But he still doesn't want to cooperate if he knows whats going on. I found the easiest thing to do is keep the clippers next to the chair that I tend to sit in while I watch TV and wait for him to fall asleep in my lap. He sleeps through the whole thing. Ditto to what everyone said. I also get my cat's while they are sleeping. Usually I can finish before they are awake enough to struggle. Just make sure you use good clippers. IP: Logged |

Yes definately! If you still have problems with the scratching look into a product called soft paws. They are a plastic covering that fits over the nail. www.softpaws.com Ive seen them work for lots of people. We put them on cats all the time at the vets office. IP: Logged |

I trimmed Charlies nails today and gave then a nice buffing. He wasnt really happy with me at the time but hes over it  Thanks for the advice and im happy i trimmed them before he got caught on something and got hurt.
