We have a 3 cat househould. [2 Purebred Burmese, and 1 adopted cat from a pet rescue]. We've had them all together for a year plus. None of them have been sick before.

1) My girlfriend and I became ill last week, (cold/flu symptoms), by the end of the week (Sunday), ONE of our cats begins sneezing ALOT. Up to 7 Sneezes in a row. For about 3 days. Then out of nowhere stops sneezing entirely.

2) The next day, our 2nd cat starts having these bizarre hacking/psuedo-vomiting/coughing fits. These aren't sneezes. It literally looks like chest-convulsions. He continues to do this ALL NIGHT. Concerned that he might be having trouble breathing or swallowed something....my girlfriend took this cat to our local clinic. They say, "It's just a cold" and prescribe Baytril to administer to all 3 cats, because now we're trying to prevent this "illness" from spreading to the 3rd cat. [the female]

3) The 2nd cat comes home, and the Baytril is administered to all 3 cats that night. They're all eating/drinking at this point. The next morning, it seems as though nothing has changed. He continues with his 'fits' and refuses to eat his food. We notice that the THIRD CAT is sniffling. Frustrated, my girlfriend takes the 2nd cat back to the vet, because his symptoms hadn't changed. Different Doctor this time....he prescribes a DIFFERENT antibiotic for the cats. This time he prescribes Clavimox for the 3 cats.

Upon returning home, we notice that Cat #3 is DROOLING. Which is odd, because we've never seen her do this before. CLAVIMOX is administered that night.

4) Next morning, we notice Cat 3 is now DROOLING... HEAVILY. We're talking STREAMS of DROOL. She's breathing out of her mouth and her face looked swollen.

She was refusing to eat. We assumed that she had a stuffed nose and was breathing through her mouth because of it....hence the drooling.

5) We took Cat #3 in to see the vet. They gave her a shot of Tagamet to ease the drooling and B Complex. They kept her at the clinic for a few hours to see if her condition changed. We concluded that MAYBE she was allergic to the Baytril and this was an allergic reaction to it. "Ahhh". She seemed to stop drooling.

UNTIL WE BROUGHT HER HOME.

Hours later...it seems she's still drooling. [SEE PIC]

CAT #3 DROOLING.

We're going to an animal hospital in the city. I hope we're overreacting...but with the myriad of symptoms all these cats are showing...I'm really concerned this is MORE than a cold.

Please tell me what you think is going on here...we're off to the animal hospital in the city. Hopefully, we can figure out what's going on here.

Thanks for your time.

I wish I could offer advice but I have none. I would be concerned too. Best of luck to you.

By the way that little girl looks adorable, except for the drool!

oh goodness poor babies. Are your kitties indoor or outdoor babies? Do they go outside at all?
Have they been tested for Feline leukemia?
The clavamox is a little better then baytril. It has a little something extra in it to fight upper respitory infections. However it can take up to 7 to 10 days. The only time medication is effective for a URI is once the cat is drooly and has snot. If the clavamox dosent kick it in 10 days ask your vet for some zithromax. That should be the next step in an URI. In the mean time make sure the kitties nostrils are clean so they can smell there food. Add some garlic powder to it so they can smell it better. Give them 3 tablespoons of nutrical a day (you can get this at petsmart) and some pedialyte in their water for extra nutrients.
Good luck and keep us posted. If something changes email me at apluspetsitters@sbcglobal.net and I would be more than happy to run through some more suggestions for you.
