I have a one year old cat. she doesnt like to be touched, petted, held, brushed. that might seem abnormal to you as it did to me but she is a sweet hear. she greets me as I get home, and then she rolls over. I assume she wants me to pet her but as I start petting her, she will go away. I dont understand it. even while Im working with computer she cries, but when I go after her, she would walk away. I want my cat to become a lap cat, which she is not.

Some cats are lap cats and some are not. Some people think the way they are treated as kittens influences how they turn out. Others will say it is all genetics.

Love your cat for what she is and keep trying to give her affection and perhaps she will respond. Try some treats in your lap, or a quiet toy.

That is not abnormal at all. Some little kids hate to be held and some love it. Cats are the same way. My cat would do the wanting to be pet thing then run away from me when I got close to her. I stopped following her and she started coming up to me for attention.

Yeah, what they said. You cannot help it. I have 3 cats. The oldest one doesn't want to be held at all. The younger one will let you hold him, but he is starting to become not so needy as before. The youngest one which is about 11 weeks old likes to sleep on my lap when I work and sleep beside me in my bed. So it's all about whether your cat likes it or not.

Yeah, it just depends on teh cat my 4 1/2 yr. old doesn't much like being held, only now that we got the dog, and she gets ignored by alot of people, she loves it when i hold her (since i am her "caretaker" and giver her her food and water and am one of teh only ones who doesn't ignore her!)

Up to about 9 months ago my cat Cali hated to be held. At the time i was living with my family and Cali lived at my neighbors(my home now). She was actually very mean to most people and still is. She is still really wierd about people holding her. I am the only person in my house now that can hold her. She is always with me. She sleeps on me and i walk around with her in my arms all of the time. She is also in the same room as me 90% of the time. I agree with the other posts. You cant make your cat a lap cat. Give her more time. She will decide if she wants to be or not.

My 12-year old has never once sat on my lap. She loves to be hugged and held when I am standing up, but the minute I sit down she runs away. I gave up trying to make her a "lap cat" long ago and brought home another cat who wouldn't stay off my lap!

Have you ever heard of Tellington Touch? Linda Tellington-Jones just wrote a new book about TT for cats. She has written others for dogs and other animals. I just got the book about cats, and she describes changes in cats after she used the technique with them. She talks about extremely unsociable or anxious cats changing from nearly ferile to warm and affectionate. It is a very interesting book. I bought it for my cat, Aradia, who is extremely anxious. I was hoping it would help her adjust to the other animals in our house. If you are interested in more information, I think the web site is www.tellingtouch.com.

I will have to look into that book. I have one cat that just can't seem to get enough and one cat that jsut wants nothing to do with us LOL She comes up and cries but then runs we call her a tease LOL Our male cat is just the opposite! As soon as we sit anywhere he just comes running and jumps on our laps and licks our face. We think he might have been a dog in a past life cause he acts more like a dog then a cat!

Our baby can be that way at times. I thought it was becasue I was overly motherly and smothering him with kisses becasue he would get on daddy's lap but not mine. Now come bedtime it's mommy he sleeps right next too without fail I wake up to cat hair in my nostrols and I love it. Other than that he will run from me unless it's time for tricks and treat time or feedings.
