We have a new kitten (NK) and have slowly integrated him into our household with our resident cat (RC). Things are working out fine between the two of them, the only problem now is that NK wants to eat RC's food, and vice-versa. We are finding it near-impossible to feed the two separately. Is it okay for RC to eat kitten food until the kitten is old enough to switch over to adult food?

Hi, How old is your new kitten and how old is the adult cat???

They say that adult food is to rich for kittens as it give thsm diarreah, I have to disagree its the same with any animal when switching foods this will happen even if done gradually...

Aslong as both cats are eating and drinking plenty then there will be no problems ,, my mums kittens wouldnt eat kitten food but would eat there mothers.

kitten food is also ok for adult cats as some owners prefer to feed this to senior cats.

If you are at all worried about your kitten please call a vet who will be happy to help.

I had the same problem. I ended up leaving dry adult food down all the time. Well at first I put it up where the kittens couldn't get it. This worked until they were old enough to jump, so then I gave up and put it down on the floor again. In the morning and at night I would feed the kittens canned kitten food, sometimes mixed with hard food. As they got older I would feed them just hard kitten food in the morning and at night. They liked their food so much that they didn't eat very much of the adult food. They usually kept full on their food. They all grew up very healthy.

Adults who eat kitten food can get fat easily, it has more fat than adult food.

I had this problem with my first 2 kittens....I ended up just mixing the adult food and the kitten food together.
The last kitten I got ate the same food as my adults because it was made "for all life stages" and that seemed to work out quite well.

Thanks so much for the replies and the advice...

NK is about 10 weeks old, RC is 4 1/2 years old. I know there's more fat in the kitten food but RC is very active, so I don't think she'd necessarily get fat from eating it. As it happens, she seems to have lost interest in the kitten food so long as her regular food is available, but NK still prefers her adult food to his... I think this might be because before we got him he was eating his Mom's adult food. I think I will try mixing the two foods together & see what happens... will keep you posted.
